Hawaii is overrun with wild animals whose ancestors were brought here on boats and canoes, tame: wild pigs, wild chickens, wild turkeys, and so forth. Our most-cultivated acre is protected from them by walls.
Here's part of the rock wall we've built - about 600 feet so far of drystack work.
And here's part of a quicker solution, built with native materials of a more modern sort :) Most of these walls run through woods, invisible from the house, so the place feels as if it's in a natural, unfenced clearing. If a chicken does get in, we tell it in no uncertain terms to leave (throwing things and yelling) which works as long as we keep our gates closed and our fences mended.
