Big Island, HI Nude Beaches

Hello,
Planning a trip to the Big Island later this year. Anyone have recommendations on nude beaches? Looks like there are a couple of options, just curious about the types of crowds and how much space you have.
Thanks,

RE: Big Island, HI Nude Beaches

My wife and I were just over there at the end of January 2012.  We stayed at "Hangin' Loose" which is a very small, clothing optional resort with great hosts: Michael and Jan.  It is south of Hilo and not far from Kehena Beach which is clothing optional and used by locals and visitors alike.  Very funky, '60's atmosphere at times, but wonderfully relaxing.  However...DON'T GO IN THE WATER if the surf is up even slightly.  The shape of the cove magnifies the wave height as they approach the beach.  I really got pounded coming back in, since you can't see enough to know just when to make a dash for the beach.  It also creates a bit of an off-shore current (rip tide) and takes a lot more effort to regain the beach.

I think Kahena Beach is the best on the big island.  This is one of the more "relaxed" clothing optional/nude beaches you'll find.  Good mix of locals and touristas.  Take some food and drinks if going for the day.  Worth the trip!  Enjoy!

RE: Big Island, HI Nude Beaches

My wife and I stayed at Hangin Loose as well and really like it.  The only downside was that there were not others staying there the few days we did.  Jan and Michael were great hosts and it was a nice location to walk around to see the flowers, but not very big.  We also made the short drive to Kahena Beach.  It is a challenge to climb down to the beach, but worth it.  We found a good mix of locals and visitors...clothed and nude.  It was very relaxed and friendly.  We must have hit a good time for the surf, as we never had a major problem swimming (you did have to be alert for "incoming").  We tried a couple of other beaches that were noted as CO beaches, but never saw anyone but textile bathers.  One formerly nude beach near Kona was very nice with anly a few sunbathers and swimmers.  We did "lose" our suits while swimming...fun!  Another beach, further from Kona was very far from the parking lot and very rough roads.  We found some perfect spots for nude sunbathing and swimming, but there were too many textiles around.  Did see one topless sunbather and one woman with a VERY minimal g-string "suit".  She may as well have had no suit!  Talked with her and husband...very nice people.  I think the nicest people in this world wear no clothing!! Was a bit disappointed in not having more CO beach experiences on the Big Island.  This winter we went to Oahu, and as expected, found nothing.  There are some great beaches, but too many people and officers around.  There is a little naturist resort that is trying to get up and running on the North Shore...North Shore Naturists.  We visited the owners there and found them to be really great people.  they had one guest, but were not officially open.  We may try it if we can make another trip.  They said that there is a nude beach that people visit mostly on the weekends across from Dillingham Airfield...Polo Beach?  We did not have a chance to visit it.  Have not visited Maui and its nude beaches.  hope to do that sometime.  It is a crime to be nude in public in Hawaii...what IS a crime is not being able to BE nude in such a paradise!
