A sometimes necessary evil for men

An elevated PSA count might mean nothing, but the guys cannot afford to ignore it. After undergoing a prostate ultrasound/biopsy on Tuesday, I cannot recommend it as a good way to spend a half-hour, but it beats the alternative.

The worst part is the probe going in where stuff ordinarily comes out. Once the novocain is injected, the biopsy needles just give the sensation of being painlessly stapled.

If you need it, do it.

RE: A sometimes necessary evil for men

I would be really surprised to hear that any male nudist hasn't or didn't want to be examined annually or otherwise for some of these deceases and illnesses.  I know several textile male friends that absolultely will not have this exam done, have their prostate checked and have yet to have a colonoscopy.  This fear or embarrassment of having a Dr. probe and exam your internal organs via your anus is idiotic.  But then again ... my wife has friends that refuse to have mammo's and annual pap smears done.   Makes us scratch our heads.  I don't see it as an "evil."  I see unnecessary illness and death as the "evil."  ;)

My older brother and only sibling, decided an elevated PSA count and resultant prostate cancer could be managed with proper nutrition alone,  without medical intervention. We buried him three years ago. If you want to live guys, if you don't want loved ones left behind to mourn, do the responsible thing and take care of yourselves. I had my annual PSA done last month, was normal. I don't want my mother to have to bury her only surviving child. GET IT DONE!!!

RE: A sometimes necessary evil for men

I don't see it as an "evil."

Not evil in the sense of demonic, but in the sense of it being a procedure that many men would rather avoid because of its invasive nature. Having one's aft aperture penetrated by a finger or an ultrasound probe is out of their comfort zone.

As a guy grows older, the procedure becomes more crucial, since prostate cancer is more common in middle-aged and "mature" men. Live with the inconvenience and discomfort, or die without it. Not much of a choice, IMO.

RE: A sometimes necessary evil for men

I understood the context. : )     As a firefighter,  I worked, lived and befriended many a "macho" guy.   I was absolutely amazed at how many of these guys refused the prostate exam and those that were old enough ... refused to have a colonoscopy done.  The idea that having a doctor's finger or a probe inserted in your anus made you less a man and that there may be question as to your sexual orientation.  Like I said ... "idiots!"      If some of the men, out there, knew or saw "my" doctor ... they would probably welcome the exam.  My wife refers to her as "Doctor Malibu Barbie."   But I went to her on a recommendation from my daughter.  She is the first Doctor I've had that listens, is hands on, tries different remedies before writing a prescription and ... calls periodically after a treatment to see how you're doin' ... lost art of Doctorin'.  If I had a male doctor that did all these things, my female doctor does, I'd undergo the exams as well, just as willingly.  I welcome the periodic exam to ensure I am healthy ... ALL exams.  I think the momentary discomfort of a finger or probe up your anus is minor compared ... as you say ... "to the alternative."  I've got a lot of life left to live and I can live with an periodic exam, momentary discomfort ... to forego "the alternative!"  :D

The colonoscopy is somewhat more imposing, given the sheer size of the beast.

It's fascinating to lie there unsedated (I'm a tough old bastard) and watch it on the monitor, snaking through the intestine like a science-fiction video clip. Got a clean bill of health with it.

Being "macho" is a lousy excuse for lying in the oncology ward, racked with pain, with your guts rotting away. Put aside the manly man crap and live with the short-term indignity. Your family and friends will thank you.

A colonoscopy is also a necessity for women. With the drugs injected, it's something not remembered.    The worst of it all is the preparation.

Biopsy result: completely negative. It was worth the experience to find out.

I had one done about 12 years ago, it didn't hurt much. just felt strange as he push it in. It was weird seeing myself on the monitor, being probed by the beast. Now That I'm a liitle past my prime, perhaps I should soon be thinking about getting another check.

I have had 4 colonoscopies; 3 times I had polyps removed. Each one was a potential tumor. I am still waiting for the results of the last procedure, all the others were benign.

Indeed it was, gentle souls. However, if it hadn't been, it would still have been worth it, knowing that early detection has a very high survival rate.

Best of luck, fellow Bob. Removing benign growths is infinitely better than not finding cancerous growths until it's too late.

The real problem with these diseases is if you experience symptoms it is usually too late.

Whenever it is suggested that I may need some probe, I say let's do it. It's the only way to really know what's going on. Even then there is the slight chance that something might be missed.

To the people who are embarrassed to have someone probe their private sites, I say the one who should be really embarrassed is the person doing the probing.

RE: A sometimes necessary evil for men

To the medical professional, the patient is a biochemical machine with a long list of potential malfunctions and an occasional need for service. The wise patient submits to preventive maintenance to avoid more catastrophic failure later. If a doctor, nurse or technician is embarassed by the need to use invasive techniques for internal examination, I would suggest that there is a need for maturity.

OTOH, the way some people care for themselves must certainly evoke discomfort if not disgust.

As far as colonoscopies go, the exam is not bad compared to the homework.
One of the guys in the office thought he would come to work in the morning. He started taking "the stuff" and thought he could get home before it started working. He got stuck in traffic. He used to have nice white leather seats in his car.

RE: A sometimes necessary evil for men

I had a routine physical and it was discovered that my PSA was 19.9, which was a red flag for my doctor. He sent me to a uroligist who suggested a prostate biopsy. Thank God he did. I was diagnosed with intermediate stage prostate cancer. I had not been sick or had any symptoms. This was in 2006 when I was 54. I had a radical, robotic-assisted, laparoscopic prostatectomy. I entered the hospital with cancer and came home two days later completely cancer-FREE! My doctor told me that if we had not found out, I'd have been dead in 2 or 3 years. The bottom line (pardon the pun) ... men over 40 should be tested annually. A bit of discomfort and embarrassment beats the hell out of dying. AND the gene for prostate cancer is 100% hereditary. So if you have sons, they should be tested too.

Good for you. I take it they didn't have to remove your prostate? I just had my PSA done, it came back at 1.0. It's something no man should ignore, get it done annually.
