Rooster Rock State Park

About Rooster Rock State Park

Spring at Rooster Rock is where spring fever happens. Imagine the first warm, sunny days of spring where meadows of wild roses and the spicy scent of Oregon grape combine with an endless panorama of the Cascade mountains, blue sky and the deep blue waters of the Columbia River. During the first sunny days of spring, people suddenly call in sick at work or school. That's when our parking lot fills up! One of the largest swimming areas near Portland serves visitors who want a natural experience. It's even more natural the farther east you go at Rooster Rock (where you'll find one of Oregon's two designated nude beaches). By design, the nude beach area is completely separate and not visible from the clothing-required area of the large park. The two areas coexist in harmony.

The park used to get a lot of people mostly couples. Now it is about 85% men or gays. There is no volleyball anymore like it used to have. The park rangers still patrol the area once in awhile. Mexicans will come down to gawk but refuse to take off clothes.

We make frequent visits whenever we're in Portland, Ore. area. Enter park and go far right; go down any trail and bear to the right; far right trails lead to the gay area. Straight down and ahead from restrooms lets to the more family oriented area- volleyball and BBQs(park personnel furnish a big BBQ on holiday occasions. There is a Yellow Flag program- for single women, children, or anyone who is made to feel threatened may seek out those volunteers(well screeened) with Yellow Flags-for safety. Nearly always present at the only U.S. flag flying is the 'Flag Guy' who takes walks looking out for inappropriate behaviours; he is dialed into the park personnel; While there have always been quite a number of single males 'trolling', we've never had a problem with anyone. This is a tidewater area,,

Pros
friendly, safe and patrolled by Park personnel....easy access..

Cons
visible 'gay' activity might make for discomfort for newbees....
