Exhibitionist : Voyeur or just silly

Exhibitionist, voyeur or just silly?

When I talk about naturism, I first state for me it is; healthy, self-empowering, confidence building, enlightening etc. After this I relate it to the bigger picture; reduces negative body issues in young people, helps to stop the exploitative porn industry, levels people to values that matter etc.Increasingly I hear a reply that interests me; it isn’t for me but live and let live, often followed with, I would try it or I have done something like when younger. If you pursue this conversation, it becomes a body image response rather than one of upbringing; why would anyone want to see me naked? A view unfortunately echoed by the statement -naturism is for young people I don’t want to see fat old wrinkled bodies. As naturists, we know the answers to these comments and how we would respond to the person giving the second statement. The thing I do not say is that it feels good to be naked around others because… I do not have a universal answer for this.

One concept many have issues with is social nudity, those who state they are never naked at home in front of partner or kids, clearly have issues to address (or undress). Those who ask why do it in public have a good point. When you have that great, pert, defined body it makes sense to strip amongst your peers. It is the same as dressing to look good, or behaving in a way that makes you attractive to others. It is part of our natural behaviour, mirrored throughout the animal kingdom. Often mistaken as a purely sexual mating response, it is more than that. It is a form of social bonding and hierarchy that we are no longer automatically tuned into. We are showing ourselves to be healthy and actively looking for that in others.

Add 30 years, gravity and childbirth and this falls a little flat as a reason to get your kit off in public. Now speaking as a normal healthy male (55 years old) with all the human instincts still making themselves apparent, I can confess to a few things. Firstly, the sight of a beautiful body is still attractive and secondly my body no longer attracts the admiring glances that my ego would like. This can lead to a problem.

If I am on a beach with others of the same age in the majority, I am a happy bunny, if it becomes a majority cast of beautiful people then I do become very self-conscious. Why? Either because I find myself looking-on enviously at the youth I have lost, or by being outcast from the social aspects due to not fitting in. I am a naturist not looking for validation by others, intelligent and with significant emotional maturity; so, what is going on?

The answer is simple; I think we have a cycling thought process that makes us get naked.

We like to be naked our bodies are great things; on some level, no matter what nature has given us we like to get it out there and not hide it (exhibitionist). When we do this, we like to look, to compare, to understand diversity and variation and just simply be inquisitive (voyeur). When we do this we sometimes become simply silly; our emotions kick in as we work out where we fit in. These instincts are natural; they make us human beings. For me that is the real reason I am a naturist, I want to be a human animal, linked to my primitive self with a good splash of advanced social awareness – I love being naked around others because at some point I will feel daft and in doing so will better understand others and myself. So, it seems I have the answer to the question after all – wanting to be naked around others is silly, a recipe for disaster for my ageing male ego. In other words; it keeps me sane in this ridiculous, devaluation, ego concentric world of ours.

Get naked, get real – be silly again

  • Just a test, I'm new here.
    • Bravo truth to power . Get naked and be happy and whole
      • Interesting as I can relate to all, yes exhibitionist in my younger dates and always to a degree a voyeur..but I was brought up in a strict no nude house, but as I played rugby from an early age and did up until a few years back got used to being naked in front of people in a none sexual none phobic way..so am happy nude. As a family we are nude a lot at home and comfortable and have tried hot tub with our friends and was a laugh...I now find being naked relaxing.
        • Very interesting the text approach
          • As a 55 year-old man I can very well relate but would offer this; I too don't get the admiring glances that someone much younger does but I never did, as I'm not an attractive man. What I enjoy now as a nudist is a comfort with may age - a wisdom and experience that I didn't have in my 20's, 30's, or 40's, as well as the knowledge that there's so much more to a person than taut skin or 6-pack abs. I love real bodies and I think now I just care less what others think because I have one :])
            • Great post, thank you. I have lived with many of those thoughts and questions.
              • I am usually at a loss for ecplanation when asked about my preference as a naturalist. Thanks for your thoughts. I will borrow them with apprieciation!

Known as Bugly to my friends (all three of them) because it rhymes with ugly. I am beach bum from the glorious North Devon (UK) coast. I have been a naturist since i was born, a father of far too many kids, and now part of a naturist family with my wife and one last daughter who will not leave home. I am passionate about the environment, the sea, and behavioural evolution. My daughter tells me I am too intense, too poor, and insensitive to be of use to anyone unless they are desperate.
I love lone walking , lone reading, lone writing, hate idiots and lads, in fact get on with very few people - I am on TN to be cured, so if desperate - friend me. My daughter wrote this bio, personally I think I am a nice guy.View my profile
