Why do non nudists try to cover themselves when participating in a nude event?

It makes me laugh a bit when people who would not consider themselves as nudists take part in a nude event. Videos of WNBR, skinny dip record attempts or sporting events and things like these have the men with their hands cupped in front and so many women with one arm across both breasts and the other covering the genital region. Don't they realize that those hands will be in more important places once their activity begins?

A funny question for somebody who hasn't any photo in his profile.

There's a difference between being nude on a beach, and nude at an event where photos could turn up in news articles

A funny question for somebody who hasn't any photo in his profile.

Why would I need a photo to ask such a question. It just so happens that there are very few photos of me, period. That includes clothed ones too. For the most part, I am a private nudist because there are no legal or convenient places for me to be nude. I've been to a nude beach and certainly did not cover myself when walking from the water to my blanket nor from the blanket to where it was more convenient to put my clothes back on.
So, if you have any ideas as to why people who participate in a nude activity attempt to cover themselves with their hands, I'd like to know why? They have been seen completely nude or will be when the activity begins and there is a good chance that they will know none of the other participants. Why cover?

I have participated in 10 World Naked Bike Rides in Los Angeles.
Yes, there are some pictures out there with people covering themselves either with there hands or some item, however, most of those pictures were stages for that effect.
These same people had no problem posing for photos nude, either alone or in group shots.
Also not all nude riders are nudists.
The very first Los Angeles ride was organized by someone who had never been nude in public. He did believe in its message of promoting bike safety, environmental responsibility, acceptance of all and body positive values.

I think the answer to your question is: Society teaches us that nudity is shameful, but the reason for this is never revealed.

There have been several reasonable answers to your question. I believe the one concern, of photos being published, is the most likely one. Nonnudists must live in the textile world and a nude photo could cause them much harm.

It seems strange to me, because I would have thought the embarrassment hurdle would be if one is seen participating at such an event or not, rather than if one is on display or not.

Heard one such account once from that Naked Dating show. The girl was not embarrassed that her grandmother knew she was featured on the show so much as how the censors missed blurring her on one 'rear' shot and grandmother would see more of her between her legs than intended.

And you have to remember that the only pictures you're seeing are the ones posted in mass media, where any sort of full-frontal nudity showing genitalia would be against the law in most areas. These media are already skirting the bounds of propriety with swimsuit ads and such, and don't want the guns of the anti-porn people to be leveled at them.

If you go to the publications of AANR or TNS, you'll find plenty of pictures of people in similar activities who aren't covering their naughty bits.

I can understand what has been written in the last three postings, but it does not answer the original question of what the mindset would be. People coming out of the water after a skinny dip record attempt can't be afraid of being found out from a photograph if the hands are covering the groin instead of the face. Those who run in nude races can't cover themselves during the race, but can be seen with their hands strategically placed. I myself would participate without trying to cover any part of me as I would if clothing were the attire for the day.

Without a question I am a nudist and so is my wife. There are times she is not "feeling" it when company comes over be it they are nudist as well and have seen her naked for years. Don't ask me to explain that beings I am but a mere male. She for some unknown reason to me has always been the lead for others to feel comfortable declothing. If she in it's game on and if not well lets just say it's just a textile gathering.

At that point if I see it's not going to happen I feel under dressed being the lone one out and will put some sweats on. So that is another reason reason why a nudist will put clothes on.
