10 cities where public nudity is legal

Our most natural state is in the nude. However, walking around naked is illegal these days, or is it? Here's a look at 10 cities around the world where baring all in public is allowed.

Cap D'Agde, France: Best known as the world's biggest nude town, the city grows to 40,000 people during summer, and a good chunk of them are nudists. Cap D'Agde is home to one of Europe's biggest nudist resorts. While nudism is legal in Cap D'Agde, anything perceived as a sexual act is not. There are places for swingers and those with fetishes to gather, but they are behind closed doors.

Portland and Eugene, Oregon: The American state of Oregon has some of the most open nudity laws in the United States. After the infamous naked bike ride, the rest of the world became aware that it's totally okay to get naked, just as long as no one else is enjoying it. In legal terms, you can't get naked with the intent to arouse others around you.

Munich, Germany: In April 2014, Munich, Germany made news when they gave the okay for nudists to go out in public and even sunbathe, meaning that public nudity is now legal, but with restrictions. The city has created six, "Urban Naked Zones", where people can strip down in public in local parks near the city centre of Munich. But, these areas don't have fences, meaning that anyone can wander into them.

Austin, Texas: The US city of Austin has Texas' only government-maintained clothing optional park called "Hippie Hollow", which sits on 100 acres of the shoreline of Lake Travis, and is only about 20 miles away from downtown Austin. But, if getting totally naked isn't your thing, outside of Hippie Hollow, Austin is a topless-friendly city for the ladies.

London, England: It is completely legal to get naked in the Wales and the United Kingdom. But, it is illegal if you're nude for the sake of shocking and upsetting others. So, in this case, the nudity law is fairly liberal. That's probably why the city of London has so many clothing-optional business establishments from gyms to poetry readings to restaurants, among others where nudists are welcome.

New York City, New York: This US city is technically a grey area. While it is legal for women and men to be topless, the decision to arrest is up to the police officer. Instead of being arrested for indecent exposure, a citizen can make a complaint against a topless woman, for causing disorderly conduct due to their nude breasts. Even so, that hasn't stopped hundreds of women from exercising their rights to be topless, especially while in the midst of protesting Wall Street.

Honolulu, Hawaii: Basically, it is legal for women to be topless in the US state of Hawaii. But, if you're looking for an all-nude experience, stay away from any public park or beach. If you're looking to unbuckle your pants, then you might want to look for one of the local nudist beaches in the city since it's illegal to expose your genitals. A brief breakdown of where it's ok save you a headache with local authorities.

Washington D.C.: In the capital of the United States of America, there's an official Go Topless Day in the city. Washington D.C. is one of the most well-known cities to have top freedom laws. But again, like in New York City, topless women can be arrested for disorderly conduct, so precautions must be taken. If you're hoping that genitals are also protected, not really. Top freedom does not mean bottom freedom yet.

Boulder, Colorado: Colorado has already made headlines for legalising marijuana use. It's all fine and dandy just as long as your intent to being topless doesn't include arousing the public around you. If you want to bear a little more then there are plenty of nudist resorts and nude hot springs to enjoy.

RE:10 cities where public nudity is legal

I've heard alot about this allowed nakedness in Portland, but no one defines exactly what that means. You even say that you can't get/be naked with an intent to arouse. What does that even mean exactly? If I am naked in Portland, just because I wanna be naked, that's "NOT" an intent to arouse. If I'm walking down the street naked, with a cock ring on, but not with a stiffy, that's not indecent exposure and not the intent to arouse!! What's the line? If the line is grey, I'm a line crosser! I'd get naked every day and simply tell law enforcement if they stop me, that I'm a nudist.

RE:10 cities where public nudity is legal

There was no mention of Seattle, WA - where every summer, two beaches on the western shores of Lake Washington crowd with nudists to enjoy the water and sun au-naturel. These two beaches are completely unofficial and yet not a single person is pursued or arrested by the police. [The Seattle Police Dept. is completely understaffed, so they are quite adept at prioritizing what crimes need to be addressed. Nude citizens and residents socializing in peace at public parks are not even on their radar :]

As an fyi, there is also a naked bike ride at the Fremont Solstice Fair on the beginning Saturday of summer. Any cops who show up to this event are there to make sure textiles behave.

I was kinda hoping for "someone" to input whether or not Portland has these "grey areas" regarding public nudity and if so what are the boundaries? Anyone have something here??

I've been to Denny-Blaine beach. The park and beach area are quite small with very little parking. The water, even in August, is rather cold but not as cold as Lake Superior. I've also seen a local TV news item that said nudity in Seattle Parks is also legal and Seattle hosts a WNBR that starts at the Gas Works Park. It is on July 9 this year.

RE:10 cities where public nudity is legal

Regarding Boulder and topless, it is actually all of Colorado and several other states. There was a19th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that basically said that a woman can be topless anywhere it is acceptable for a man to be topless, i.e., The Court essentially held that, based upon the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution, anywhere its legal for a man to appear in public topless, its legal for a woman to do the same. The ruling hasn't been challenged. The one time to was applied that I am aware of was by a woman in Loveland. She was playing frisbee in the front topless and received a summons. She filed a lawsuit and the city settled for $50,000. After that, no woman in Colorado will be getting a ticket for being topless. Unfortunately, this is not widely known.

Even where it has been known, few women take advantage of the ruling. It is legal in Michigan too, but my wife said, "Never." That may be different if she still had the body that wore a string bikini.

So true. Topless is just not the culture here in the US. For most people, having the right to go topless or nude is different than actually doing it unless you are in a group of like-minded people.

RE:10 cities where public nudity is legal

The laws around public nudity can be quite vague.
Here in New Zealand, there is no offence of being naked in a public space.
There are however laws against 'indecent exposure'.
What determines the difference?

It appears to come down to intent and circumstance, and even that isn't always set in stone.
If I took my clothes off and walked nude up the main street of town, I would likely be arrested for indecent exposure.
If I did the same thing at a local beach, there would be no issue.
If a woman walked topless down the main street, she might be told by a police officer to cover up, but there would be no penalty.

Not so long ago there was a case here of a man who was cycling naked in a semi-rural area.
He was seen by a woman who considered what he was doing to be 'offensive behavior' and the Police were called.
He had to appear in court and was fined $200 - but he appealed the case and won.
The judge in the appeal court said "there were various levels of offensiveness when it came to nudity and suggested cycling on a country road could be considered less offensive than, for example, walking naked along a public footpath".
He also went on to say that "This judgement does not mean that nude cycling cannot constitute offensive behaviour."
In other situations, the circumstances surrounding nudity would have to be weighed up by the courts.

The line between 'offensive' and not seems to be a very thin one and all down to how the judge feels on the day.

In Paris you can do naked yoga in the park in certain areas, you have restaurants where you can eat naked and of course art galleries which you can visit naked.
