Mixing different wines

I've been told this is a 'no-no' but does anyone mix different types of wine in a glass? I've found that if I add just a large 'splash' of Shiraz to my Merlot, it gives it a little more taste. I'm not a wine expert, but it makes a difference. Does anyone care to comment?

I think it's similar to what some wine makers will do with blends.

I once heard a woman that worked the bar at a local winery say to my wife when she asked for some ice in her Chianti; "drink wine anyway you want. Just keep drinking wine!" Chilled, iced, blended... however you like wine, enjoy it that way!
