I remember swimming nude at the YMCA. In fact, you couldn't wear any clothing in the pool at all. If you did, you got into some sort of trouble. I kinda remember walking around nude after swimming a few times, but don't remember anyone playing basketball or weight lifting nude. I was there between ages of 6 and 10 years old, so the memories are a bit fuzzy. Since my family was clothing optional at home, nothing about being nude at the YMCA stands out because I didn't care.
naked workout in a big gym is a fantasy that didn't get thought through ------ nobody who really works out would think it a good idea you lay naked on the same sweaty benches a couple hundred other naked guys laid on that same day. towels don't give protection ------ nobody keeps track what side the towel up or down -- towels just another surface collect everybody's funky sweat etc on and spread it all over you and everywhere else. you got all kind of chance for contact dermatitis --- some really bad stuff like MRSA. i dont trust gym equipment get cleaned enough from all that. i work out naked at home with my pop and brother and one close friend --- this cool cuz we got control over it and keep it good and sanitary......

I haven't done or read any studies about this topic but I wanted to address your second point. There are tons of rumors about what may or may not go on at the Y. I've heard it all. I was a member of the local Y for years going three or four times a week and I am here to tell you that I never saw anything out of the ordinary going on. Rumors can be interesting or exciting and they're not always true.
Now due to social distancing orders I sit at home wishing I could enjoy the amenities of my local Y and spend some time socializing with the guys I used to talk to both at the Y in general and relaxing in the locker room. One of my favorite things was to sit in the steam room after working out especially on cooler/cold days. Hopefully we can get back to that soon.
yeah i don't think dudes be playing b-ball naked.... need shorts at least for that -- or on weight benches naked be so unsanitary....... or running throughout building naked dont seem likely.... but swimming and going down hall from residence room to bathroom seem natural be naked, and in extra mini gym warmup room off locker room naked seem cool too.......
yeah a gym where bunch a dudes working out all day naked feel like a old perv fantasy more than any kind of memory of reality. can pick up some serious rashes and worse--- plus nobody wanna lay around on everybody else nasty booty sweat hahaha

Hmmm... Keeping in mind I was pretty young and not politically aware back then, I didn't notice any homosexual activity at the YMCA at all. Remember, the "C" in YMCA stands for "Christian". I remember prayers and even church services at the YMCA. I doubt any openly homosexual behavior would have been supported then. But, I could be wrong.
I do remember when the YMCA was under pressure to allow girls to use the facilities. I suspect that is when the "You MUST swim nude" policy was changed.

I would tend to agree that coed use of the facilities prompted the change not only at the Y, but schools and colleges too. In 1969, I swam nude in college. Within two years the swimming classes were coed.

You're probably right. At the time, there was a YWCA in major cities, specifically for women. I don't know if they were subsidiaries of the YMCA organization or something completely separate.
Now, of course, you don't have to be young, male, or Christian to join a YMCA. I hope that its tolerance eventually extends to naturists as well.
