how can I delete groups that I have no interest in anylonger?

It's the old Microsoft logic. Click on Start to shutdown your PC. :)

If your membership is pending approval you have a problem. You can't leave it.

go to the groups tab at the top of your membership page and enter the name of the group you want to leave in the search box, when it comes up on the left side of the screen you should see a short summery of the group with a visit join and leave group tabs then click on leave group.

Another way but the same problem: If your membership is pending approval you can't leave the group.

Another way but the same problem: If your membership is pending approval you can't leave the group.
With the result that there are some private groups whose only administrator has stopped logging in with a very long list of members awaiting approval.

Always check when the group admin last logged in before applying to join a private group.
