I personally knew two people (one in retail and the other at a hospital) who openly came out as nudists at work. They were both ridiculed, labeled "weirdos"; and the stigma lasted during for the rest of their employment there. I tried to defend them without directly "outing myself", but I was brushed off. Small town people...small minds. I learned from this that you need to have really thick skin to openly come out as a nudist in some environments. And I'm not THAT thick-skinned.
If you're going to "come out" at work, it's better to do it with specific people with whom you have a rapport based on mutual trust and respect - that extends beyond the workplace. I've done this a few times; and in one case a co-worker actually embraced home-nudism after discussing it with me. And they never "outed" me.
My situation was different. As a firefighter, we lived together for 24hrs, at least 10 days a month. Not too much we didn't know or learn about one another. Even though I was the youngest on my crew, back in '77, there wasn't a guy on the shift that wasn't a military vet. They also ALL took gang showers in Jr. HS and HS. ALL firehouse showers were gang type showers.
From day one at the firehouse, I slept naked. Sure, I got some teasing, but I said, "I live here 10+ days out of every month. This is my home for those days. I live this way at home." They accepted it and kidded mildly but I had 3 older uncles (more like brothers). I was in the Navy for 4 years, by the time I was out, and on the fire department, I had skin like armor.
I never shied away from being naked in the locker room, the dorm, sleeping naked, getting up in the middle of the night and going to the bathroom, walking across the station to the kitchen for a glass of water. I became known as the nudist fireman, without really ever coming out as a nudist. Later, I'd be asked if I was a nudist and I said, "yes. Have been most of my life now and so is my wife."
I was caught naked in the front office of the firehouse I commanded, one late night after midnight, by my boss, the Battalion Chief. ALL he said to me was, "do you have something to slip on if someone comes to the front door?" When I told him I did, all he said was, "okay." Even female firefighters that came to work with me for 24 hrs knew of me and still wanted to come work with me because I was fun to work with. I never intentionally exposed them to my nudity and a chance sighting only happened a couple of times in 32 years.
As in Andy's case, there are exceptions where it's accepted.
One notable one for me was a friend of mine, who was co-owner of a small business (3-4 employees). Not only did all his co-workers know he was a nudist; but he was also nude when he did paperwork in the back office. I actually went to see him at work once; and he was in fact naked in his office then. While visiting and interacting with the other employees, I found out that his female co-worker (the admin assistant) actually had accompanied him once to his resort and had socialized nude with him and his GF at their home on occasion. His business partner, whose wife was against it, had not.
I found it pretty fascinating that nudity had been so normalized at a workplace and between co-workers. But I think that's very rare outside of self-employment or very small workplaces.
There have been countless threads on this subject on every naturist website I've been a member of. I do consider myself very fortunate to have had mostly great people I worked with that were tolerant of my lifestyle. When I read all those posts before me, on every thread started on this subject, I counted my blessing that I didn't have anyone make a big deal out of it to the point of contacting HR or anyone above my boss or his boss. By the way, both of those guys were firemen under my supervision at one time.
I did have two firemen that pitched a bitch about my nudity at the kitchen table one morning. I reminded them that when they came to work for me, I told them about me and they said, "it doesn't bother me!" Now, they have changed their tune. I brought them into the captain's office and set some new ground rules about us having separate times in the locker room and head for each shift we worked together. The second shift we worked, after our talk in the captain's office, they both were in the locker room during my time. Again, I called them into the front office and talked to them about that. They both said, "ahhh, it really doesn't bother us and we're fine with it." It was then that I needed witnesses and out to the kitchen table we went so everyone could hear them say, "it's not an issue with them."
It can't be easy to live this lifestyle and have it be a secret at all times. My wife kept it a secret at work, but she really didn't have much contact with colleagues as much as she did students. There wasn't much socializing between her coworkers as there were with me and mine.
was working with a new hire and she said one day can't wait to get home and get her clothes off. I said really, I am a nudist too.she said she lives alone, kids all grown up.she said come over some time, she lived out in country and had a big fenced in yard.Later in the spring she said come over so I did and she answered the front door naked. we spent the day naked in the backyard, she had a above ground pool to cool off in.
As others have posted, there are to many variables in each situation to give an answer that will work for everyone. I can only tell you what I have done and so far I have never had a negative response.
At my previous job, there were only two of us. My boss/brother-in-law knew I was a nudist and by the time we had to close the business after ten years, most of the other tenants in our small industrial complex either knew I was a nudist or had actually seen me nude.
I have been at my current job since the summer of 2015. It is also located in a small industrial area but with a lot more activity. We share the unit with another company. They have the front office area and we have the back warehouse. There are two owners of the company I work for that spend most of there time in the field. I work alone in the warehouse taking care of shipping/receiving and helping the occasional will-call customer. The other company consists of the owner and two women who handle sales.
Until a couple of weeks ago, none of these people new I was a nudist.
It has been extremely hot the last few weeks. The front office closes about an hour before we do and I will change into my WNBR shirt once they leave. I can put my regular shirt back on quickly enough if someone comes back in.
One of the women from the front office has been staying late at least two days a week.
I finally told her I normally put on a sleeveless t-shirt but was not sure how she would feel about the image on it. Her answer surprised me when she said I could go without a shirt and it would not bother her.
I kind of laughed and said don't temp me.
A few days after this exchange I had the WNBR shirt on when she came back to tell me she was leaving for the day. I walked her back through the office in order to lock the door after she left.
It took a few minutes for her to realize what was on my shirt and she asked if I had actually done that.
I told her not only had I ridden once but in June had completed my twelfth ride.
Her reaction was one of surprise but also support.
Before anyone questions why I do not work without a shirt on or even nude, I do, but only on those occasions when I am 100% sure no one will be coming in.
Attached is a picture of my shirt and another one I took on Friday (9/2/22) showing I do occasionally work nude.
If someone told me that I could work shirtless in a warehouse, I would take every advantage of it.Where have you done a WNBR?
I do take advantage of every opportunity to at least take my shirt off, if not be completely nude.
My problem is I do not know when one of my bosses could come in unexpectedly.
All my WNBR rides have been through Los Angeles, CA.
My first one was in 2010 and we only had about 80 riders.
I have ridden in all twelve rides since then (naturally there was no ride in 2020).
I will repeat what I have said whenever I post about participating in the WNBR.
Based on the positive reaction from almost all that see us, I know that the vast majority of the general public does not have a problem with simply seeing someone nude.

Does your boss have a problem with you working shirtless if you keep your pants or shorts on?
