Death Valley 2023

A few weeks ago, our entire immediate family helped me celebrate my 70th Bday in Death Valley, CA. We spent President's weekend in the park and stayed at a place where I've stayed on the annual boy's trip. The accommodations were a little rustic for my wife's taste, at first, but the place grew on everyone, and they are all planning another trip out there.

We visited Cerro Gordo Mine and Ghost Town, Ballarat, traveled up Coyote Canyon where one of the vehicles got high centered and we recovered them. Now my wife knows why I bought all that recovery gear! The next day we did all the touristy stuff, Stovepipe Wells, Furnace Creek, Artist Palate, Twenty Mule Team Trail, Dante's View and the kids played in the Mesquite Dunes near Stovepipe.

Great time had by all. My wife, who did not like Death Valley during a quick stop, now has a new outlook and wants to return again and again. She now realizes why I love it out there so much, not to mention the ability to be naked out there and off-road nude as well.

Next boy's trip will be on the Mohave Trail from Laughlin, NV to Barstow, CA. First overlanding trip for me and I've been looking forward to this for many years. Certain it won't be the last, but I doubt my wife will partake in that type of adventure! haha

I'll be with one son in law, youngest grandson, a few co-worker friends and several other non-nudists so this will be a clothed trip until I'm in my tent! hahaha

Tent camping on the ground or cot. Being that I'm of this ripe ol' age and sleeping on the ground is not an option for me, I'm sleeping on a cot in a 2-person tent. My son in law has an 8-person tent. I would sleep with him and my grandson, but I get up so much during the night, get up so early, I don't want to wake them up or disturb them. Most of the co-workers know I'm a nudist, as does my co-pilot, son in law and grandson. It's just easier if I bunk alone.

Some of the guys have roof top tents. There are no campers on this trip. There are a couple that are fine with sleeping on the ground in a bag. I'm not doing that! I'll take some pics of camp and our set up and post them on here.

thanks i have reached the age where my bed at home is hard to beat, I wake up with sore back pretty often on trips. also understand getting up to relieve at night. Hope it all goes off without a hitch. Some of the tall trailers for overlanding usually tear drop or just a little larger look interesting.

As much as I'd like to do this (overlanding) quite a bit, I'm certain a cot with double padding still isn't going to beat my memory foam mattress. My wife's naked butt will be missing as well. If I do begin doing this more often, an over landing trailer with a tent would be okay. During our occasional off road trips, I still have to take some advil to get through the night. Neck, back, shoulder and knee injuries took their toll but I don't want them to detour my love of off roading and hopefully, overlanding. Hoping to run into a YouTuber that got me into this overlanding craze. Not sure if you're aware of TrailRecon.

I have come to realize that intentionally roughing it does not make a good trip. I do my best to sleep comfortably and if you have a vehicle to overland with vs a backpack, then why wouldnt you have a cot or something. I am not a fan of climbing into a rooftop tent. Or climbing out in the middle of the night either.

I have been obsessed with researching overland teardrops. Would love to pick one up, but they are overpriced. Some are the same price as my 30ft trailer I bought in 2017. So I am holding for some good used teardrops to hit the market.

Hi!
Sorry for the late reply. Not sure what happened there. The overlanding trip has come and gone, and it was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone. The sleeping accommodations were sleeping bags and tents. I could not convince myself to sleep on an air mattress so I bought a cot. First night was cold. Luckily, I had a 20-degree bag that kept me comfy, even while naked. We camped at about 5600 ft level and it got pretty chilly. My Jeep was packed with stuff that I didn't use but I think it'll all come in handy as we continue to do this. Future trips are being planned.

I actually slept okay out there in my accommodations. 4 person tent, extra wide cot with padding, an additional inflatable pad, my 20-degree bag and a heavy blanket. Yes, the getting up at night to relieve one's self is tough. I actually used a plastic coffee container. The next morning, I dug a hole and empty it and then rinsed it and bagged it for the next night. Didn't use it all that much the second night.

I don't see myself using a roof top tent either. If I'm drinking a lot, with the boys, I can get up 3 times and the thought of climbing up and down that ladder does not interest me at all. If we continue to overland, I may convince my wife that we can sell the motorhome and get a overlanding trailer with all the amenities she needs to go out there with me! hahaha ... who am I kidding.

Heading out today on some local trails. A good friend just bought a family Jeep and has never driven off road. He did sit shotgun with me on the Mohave Trail, East to West. He enjoyed it enough; he bought our daughter and son in law's extra Jeep. I'll take him on some easy stuff today to get his feet dirty and his Jeep!

I'm hoping to get back out there with the wife or by myself and do some naked 4x4ing during the week.
