Sandringham Beach, Melbourne - nude bathing?

I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about Sandringham beach in Melbourne? I remember reading somewhere that it was once considered for nude bathing. Was this ever the case? And if so, has anyone actually gone nude swimming there?
Melbourne desperately needs at least one easily accessible clothing optional beach. They are all so far away and tucked away, too.Cheers,Marko
