Stealing an opportunity

Return to Discussions

With no official (or even unofficial) CO zones within walking distance, what to do? I was after a swim, having not taken my preferred early start with the kayak due to the weather being a little too cold early on for my liking.

It did get warmer but by then the sun was too high so going for a paddle without sunscreen was out, even if it remained heavily overcast. A walk seemed the best option. The nearby beach has some sort-of quiet stretches with less accessibility, but there's frequently someone walking their dog or going for a run or with their family from the seaside towns at either end. The same is with the trail just behind the beach from which one can see the sand and show in a number of places.

I decided to just walk and see if it was quiet enough along the way for a quiet dip. I slowed and looked at a sign to allow a small walking party to overtake and get ahead. I watched the beach from the trail where possible to see people walking their dogs on the shoreline. A part where the trail is atop a small cliff and there was no access to the sand showed an unoccupied towel when I looked through a gap in the foliage. A fellow traveler in search of a quiet spot? Couldn't tell, but my hopes were up. I got to the far end of my route without seeing an opportunity but returned via the sand anyway. More dog walkers including the ones I saw earlier but at least they continued on as I was returning. A young family further on playing with a drone. The towel did not belong to a fellow traveler (at least in my estimation) as she had rubbing gear on as she returned to it.

Further on, I reached a spot where no one was that close for a moment. It was the part that had a near-perfect view from the trail (while I had a poor view of much of the trail), but at least I was able to undress, quickly enter the water and enjoy.

While enjoying my swim many walkers past on the sand and I just had to wait for an opportunity to emerge. Fortunately another gap happened that I judged sufficient and I have to take from a lack of consequent screams that no one else saw me either.

Mission accomplished!

If you had made your best endeavours to avoid being caught, went to a remote location, with no one around but you did get caught, would that be a big issue?

Not sure. I don't particularly want to cause offence, and the general demographic is of older folks and young families. If I came down your way, where textiled types happily walk through the CO section, I'd probably be less worried about those same people seeing me outside that section. I'm a little more daring walking from the Sunnyside carpark when I suspect young campers aren't around. In an unofficial area I'll probably stay in my suit of others are around but if they take the initiative, I'll probably join in. Perhaps I should be bolder, but I'll assess the opportunities as they arise.

Oh, and in this case the 'remoteness' was no-one within a few 100 metres or on the path behind the beach.

If you are remote and no one else is around, what's the issue? I would be naked in those circumstances. If someone arrives, stay still, do nothing, don't acknowledge them and see what happens. If they make an issue, cover yourself, but most will probably walk on by, thinking, that's a good idea or that guy seems pretty relaxed and most would recognise that you are the only person around.
