I'm new to the group but want to suggest we set some standards for the quality of the photography we take. Set some challenges about context, location, lighting, creativeness etc. I know we are not professionals but suggest the group should get past dick pics. If people are trying to impress or pick up, is this the appropriate forum?

RE:Quality photography

I noticed there has been a few views but no comments, not sure whether that's people agree / disagree or don't care, maybe all three. The latest bunch of photo's have guys generally with their legs spread, in essence saying "look at this", well guys all us other guys have one too. How about we try to create an interesting nude shot that you would enter in a competition, this is the "Amateur Photography Group" after all. Try to do post something creative and then explain it to others who ask you about it. Constant dick pics are pretty boring.

RE:Quality photography

Its very difficult to set detail criteria as to what constitutes 'art' v 'pornography' (which, like graffiti is recognised as its own art form). Art itself is a spectrum of styles and genres so, the challenge of course is to get photos flowing from the end of the spectrum that is not pornographic.

I use some 'high level' criteria (questions) to asses whether a photo has 'artistic' value:

a. Can you write a caption to the photo that captures the essence of the photo that provides meaning and depth - does this challenge people and ask them to think?
b. Is there a classic pose that emulates the great works of art?
c. Would you be happy to show your elderly mother the photo / would you be happy with it on the front page of a national newspaper?

If you can answer 'yes' to two of the three questions, you're on the right track.

Thanks for the input, I agree with your suggestions. I have said a few similar things in other photography groups on the site. I'm not into censorship but some of the photo's posted have no artistic merit in my opinion but if the photographer / poster wants to justify along the criteria you suggest, that would be great. The dick pics & legs akimbo look seems to be saying something else and maybe they should be posted somewhere else, again, my opinion.
