BLACK & WHITE ONLY: Nude Photos

Black & white photos have a beauty all their own. This is a place for posting and discussing black & white photos, also monotone sepia photographs as well as the aesthetics of portraying nudity inB & W.

Did you ever spend your evenings in your own B/W laboratory?

There was a time when my interest in photography started - and it all started with black and white photography. I remember quite well how I spent a lot of hours developing B/W films and making your own B/W prints out of it. It was a very dark and chemical process I can tell you ;-) Did I ever do it naked ... NO ... but I started doing selfies in the nude and realised for the first time how I look like on paper.

Did I ever spend evenings in my own laboratory?? No, can't say I have. I've not been into photography in a serious way as far as developing my own film--editing digital photos is about as close as I've gotten. I do have a love of B/W though, having approached it from being an artist. I love sketching with charcoal on paper, and am part of a local artists' life drawing studio. I love what one can do with something as simple as charcoal-- blending and smudging, I can produce a sketch with a whole range of values--from deep velvety blacks through a range of greys and even textures, which in turn can make the white of the paper be as brilliant as light. Thus, in a different medium, with materials that are basic--even 'primitive' as is charcoal, B/W offers opportunity to create some wonderful images.

I think there are some connections between B/W photos and charcoal/graphite drawings in terms of what they want to express and in which way they are trying to reach that goal.

You have to concentrate your vision ... the more the better. I like charcoal/graphite drawings as well.
