Like he said, it depends on where you are staying. If you are staying in Los Angeles, I would actually recommend renting a car for the day and get up early because you can run into traffic in a few different places on the way down to San Diego. I'd almost recommend renting a car period, just because everything in Southern California is so spread out.

If you're staying in SD, you should be able to get there with an Uber. I don't think it should be too much, just depending on which part of SD you're actually staying in.

I took an Uber from Shelter Island (San Diego) to Blacks Beach last summer. The cost was about $25.00 each way using UberX.. It was $45 using Uber Black, but I did arrive in a Town Car

Thanks for the replies. I will likely be visiting both cities, but I'll probably go to Black's from San Diego. Thanks for your estimate on Uber costs. I'll likely do that from SD.

There is also a bus that stops right in front of the Salk Institute. It's the 101 bus...not the most efficient public transit but it gets you there.
When are you going to be in SD? I might be headed to Blacks this Sunday with a Couchsurfer that I'm hosting and can offer you a ride there if you'd like.
