I recently left a job teaching at a University. I have literally had doctoral students--yes, PhD candidates--who did not know how to identify the subject and the verb of a sentence.

There are so many reasons why I can't help feeling as though things are unraveling in the US. Proper use of our language and reasonable spelling knowledge are fundamental if someone's going to effectively contribute. I blame much of this problem on recent 'innovations' such as the smart phone. Choosing the right word is my job, not some moronic algorithm's that screws it up every third word. It's not the only reason I still choose to still my phone open. PhD sometimes stands for, "Push here, dummy!"
