Why is nudism seen as going against Christian values?

Return to Discussions

I am married to a Christian woman and we do believe that God loves all people and all should be welcome to worship him, no matter the race, sexual orientation, marital status, drinking or not, etc.My wife has body image issues which plays a major part in her not embracing nudity. The times it came up, she said that people would judge her and she would not be comfortable because she is "fat" (her words not mine). Then she says she worried I would see someone I liked better and would want to "upgrade".after the talk moves away from that, she then says that she believes our nudity should be exclusive, and she is the only one who should see me naked and vice-versa.Why is it that we turned nudity into such a sinful thing when in reality it's what you do with nudity that can or cannot be sinful?

Why is it that we turned nudity into such a sinful thing when in reality it's what you do with nudity that can or cannot be sinful? It's a left over from our Puritan, anti-sex, anti-women cultural history.
I have noticed, as i have matured in my faith, that many of the things touted as "Christian values" are not actually tenants of our faith at all, but rather they are cultural ...."habits" (for lack of a better word - maybe "traditions" is a good word) that have somehow become thought of as Biblical values.
Nudism is a perfect example of this. The notion that being nude is inherently wrong isn't remotely Biblical. Also the assumption that far too many accept, that nudism and sexuality go hand in hand and are inseparable, is also not at all Biblical. Yet many, MANY Christians act, talk, believe as if they were.

I believe it was kings and monarch leaders that created this
problem. They got certain ideas in their heads and made decrees to
the populace that they were to behave in certain ways.
Unfortunately, many of these concepts held over throughout the
centuries and they are being slow to counter.

An example of this is Southern California's San Onofre beach, A
woman who inherited the position of being in charge of state
beaches when the previous man retire always had it in her head that
nudity was bad. My belief is that she also had influence from one
of the more vocal park rangers. Because of her lone prejudice an
entire group has been negatively affected.

I think the problem may also have to do with church officials over the many decades.
Churches like to control the flock and tell them how to live their life. They control through fear and warn the masses that if any skin is showing it will cause lustful thoughts sexually inappropriate actions. I think peopler (mostly men) will have lustful thoughts no matter what. If we covered from head to toe they would still probably wonder what was under all the clothing...LOL. The same people will act inappropriately whether they are in a nude or textile environment.

Unfortunately, many Christians have accepted recent history (100-150 years) as biblical truth. History actually shows us that nudity was no big deal. In my opinion, it was the embracement of the swim suit by the cultural elite that began this downward spiral. Before that, men and women and children worked in the fields nude, they always swam in the nude (even in mixed company), and women could bare their breasts and feed their children without shame or any other concern.
The point is, non-sexual nudity being sin is not scriptural. Even Billy Graham skinny dipped in the white house pool with LBJ without anyone blinking an eye.
Also, I have never lusted after a woman while I was socially nude (although I have greatly admired a woman's beauty that God created while in those situations). On the other hand, I have seen women IN CHURCH, and have lusted after them because of their attractiveness and the way they were dressed on many occasions.
The only way we can help reluctant spouses is to show them the historical facts regarding non-sexual nudity. would also add that if you love your wife as Christ loves the church, she will not doubt your love for her, and the whole "he might leave me" bologna will not happen.
