Driving Naked

Pulled over on the road?

Return to Discussions

Just wondering if anyone besides myself has been driving butt naked and been pulled over by the cops. This has happened to me twice. Once because I was a few miles over the speed limit, the other time because one of my friends is a state policeman and he recognized me and I stopped with him on my tail. We chatted. He knew me so it was no big deal. It's vermont, and nudity is legal. The first time was in July, and it was very hot. The officer cracked up and said he would not give me a ticket if he could bum a couple of Marlboro Lights. Naturally I handed them over. "Keep these for later, and thanks!" he said. Then he sped off. He was a hunk.

Yes this has happened to me once. I was driving home after another great naked weekend at the cottage and of course I was totally naked at the wheel. It was late in the evening on a Sunday night and the 1.5 hr drive into the City was uneventful. However, as I as I made my way through a major city street as I got close to my home I noticed flashing red lights up ahead of me. I had just rounded a corner and from where I was to the flashing lights there was no place to turn off or avoid the area. I quickly recognized this as an impaired driver spot check and knew I was about to get busted. I quickly grabbed my cargo shorts and threw them over my lap as I was being waved over. I came to a stop and rolled my window down, my heart pounding wildly. I was so afraid that he was going ask me to get out of the car. The young officer stuck his head just inside my car (checking to see if he could smell alcohol, which he couldnt), asked if I had been drinking and then quickly shone his flashlight around the front seat, at which point he saw that my shorts were on top of my lap. He then asked me for my license and registration and said, you ARE wearing those shorts right? as he left to go call in my info. As soon as he left I quickly pulled my shorts on and did them up, and was sure I was going to get some kind of citation for being nude, but he just came back, handed me my license and said, ok, youre free to go, have a good evening. I am sure that he left me to go call in my info just to give me a chance to put the shorts on.
I was shaking when I pulled away and SO relieved that no big deal was made. And kudos to the officer that handled this the way he did. I am now a little more careful when driving nude, plus I am 10 years older, retired and really dont care as much if I did get stopped and caught. I dont think many officers would make a big deal of it.
I am not sure what the legalities are of simply driving nude here in Ontario Canada are these days.

I think that he was calling in to check that you weren't on any of their lists of offenders - especially sexual ones.

Try this link www.bn.org.uk/policing.
It is the official advice to English police on how to handle reported nudity.

I think it's the same in Britain as in Germany: Nudity is not forbidden but.. In the official advice to English police it's Causing harassment, alarm or distress towards others, in Germany it's Erregung oeffentlichen Aergernisses = arousing public nuisance. It depends on the feel of other persons about nudity if a nude person goes into arrest or not.

I have driven several times nude and luckily never been pulled over (knock on wood). I have had to stop at a check point but was clothed. Not sure what I would say to them.

Check state and local statutes.

In some places (like here in the Dallas, TX area), its not ILlegal - that is, there's nothing criminalizing public nudity/driving nude on the books - but laws are written to include wording along the lines that if anyone who "might be alarmed or offended" sees, then it could result in charges of public indecency or similar applicable violations.

Yet to happen. Given the state law refers to being in a public place or visible from a public place, it probably wouldn't be acceptable on the basis that a pedestrian or other driver could look in (and an officer just did).

RE:Pulled over on the road?

This was years ago. My two best friends and I used to do an annual nude trip to Vermont to hike various trails. Every year we would rent a really nice cabin that is rural or off the grid to allow us to be nude everywhere we wish to be. Our very first trip, they had never been to Vermont. I grew up in New England so I knew VT well. For the trip we decided to make it an all nude one. In other words, we did not pack any clothes beyond the ones we were wearing and sweatshirts in case it got cold. When we got on the free way, we all took our clothes off. My friend Steven was driving and once we got off freeway to go to the town of Killington, I kept telling him to slow down. He wouldn't listen to me to slow down as we were in rural towns and winding roads. Sure enough, a Vermont police officer sounded his alarm. We were all nude. I was able to quickly put on a short and my other friend was able to just throw a shirt on. Steven on other hands, because he was driving, did not have any time to put anything on. We got to full stop and he just put his shorts over his lap. Officer, of course, is questioning why we are going so far. He also asked us why we were here and what we plan to do. I know he noticed my friend was nude but didn't seem to have an issue. He gave us a ticket and told us to slow down. I of course told my friend I am not paying any part of the ticket because I kept warning him to
