They used to serve a useful purpose but that was a long time ago.
Used to be that a man might own a suit -- maybe two. One for everyday, one for special occasions.
It was important to keep the suit clean because washing it was a pain. So, underwear kept bodily fluids off the suit. With a fresh change of underwear every week, you could go a long time before you needed to get your suit cleaned.
Shirts used to have detachable cuffs and collars for the same reason.
Even if you worked out on the farm, you likely only had one shirt and a pair of pants.
But that was a long time ago.
