Rooster Rock, conditions on June 11

Return to Discussions

So I saw on the internet that the water levels had gone down about three feet and so I rode my bike out to Rooster Rock to see how things had changed.
Yes the water levels are down, but not enough that most of the areas are still flooded. If you walk all the way to the end of ht emain trail and cut over there are some areas there to lay out, most of them beign where people had previously tramped down the grass, which would otherwide be about four feet high, to lay flat. However the ground under he grass is very uneven and it takes a bit of searching to find a comfortable place to settle in to lay out. The dry sandy areas are very few, and it is packed sand not soft sand.
On the way out a lady said that she saw several people braving the Dragon Fly Trail even though it was underwater.. She said the people she asked told her that the water gets slightly above waist height, and that where the water is flowign it is really cold, but where the water is still it is actually really warm. I suspect it woudl nto be a goo didea to try it if you have a lot of stuff to carry.
Anyway, the website to check water levels is at
https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=pqr&gage=vapw1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1
The day I went, the water was in between an eight and a nien on the vertical axis of the chart. The previous time I was there it was at a 12.
If you hike to out to near the end of the trail a lot more trails will cut over to the lagoon area of the river now, but yo still have to go almost all the way to the end.
