The labia and social nudism

Return to Discussions

I understand that this group is mostly dedicated to the esthetics of the labia...but I think there's also a philosophical aspect worth bringing up.

My first wife started out "reluctant." And impressionable. The first nudists we met and befriended were "traditionalists"; which meant they adhered to a pretty strict interpretation of nudist etiquette. Which included female posture. The idea behind "ladylike posture" is that women should sit/lay with their legs crossed/closed. Because otherwise the labia might show; and that wouldn't be "ladylike" or "proper." Like I said: my wife was impressionable at the time; and when she heard this, she took it to mean that's how all nudist women should sit/lay - whenever in a social nudist environment.

And so she applied that concept in subsequent nudist outings. Fairly quickly, she started finding it impractical, if not downright uncomfortable. Sweat would accumulate between her thighs; and she constantly felt self-conscious about her posture. And then one day...she was lying down in a lounge chair at the resort one day, legs "glued at the knees"; and she tried getting up without parting her legs. What happened next was a tumble. As she started falling sideways I was lucky enough to see it coming; and I managed to grab her before she hit the ground. Yes; that literally happened. Up to then I hadn't really said anything because of her shyness and I didn't want her to feel self-conscious. I told her that she really didn't need to take this "ladylike posture" thing so literally. She agreed to the fact that it actually didn't really work for her.
That was the beginning.

Soon after that we went to hang out with some nudist friends at their home. There, the situation was much more relaxed, with everyone sitting in whatever posture was comfortable. My wife noticed and started wondering about the whole "ladylike posture"; because if nudism was supposed to be about relaxation, freedom and openness, then why such a hang-up about the female labia? I think she must have discussed it with other nudist women (non-traditionalists); because after that she was clearly "done" with posture etiquette.

One of the first things she did afterwards was shave. I think she'd noticed other women being shaved, liked the idea; but thought it might make her labia too visible. So I was surprised when she came out, prior to our next resort trip, completely shaved. I was also surprised when we got to the resort pool area and she requested we sit by the pool instead of the usual "back of the pool area." We picked some lounge chairs, I reclined and rested while my wife took out a book and started reading. It was a short while later that I realized that not only was she not lying with her legs "glued at the knees", but she was actually reclining with one leg propped up and the other dangling on the side of the chair. I was a bit taken aback this total change in attitude; so I turned to her and asked her if she was aware that from that position, everyone could see her labia. And she just shrugged her shoulders and said in her stern voice: "if anyone has a problem with it they can look away...or maybe they don't really "get" social nudity." I immediately felt stupid for even bringing that up. And that's when I realized my wife was making a statement: she wasn't going to let anyone dictate to her what parts of her body was "good enough" to be seen anymore. And then I was quite proud of her for expressing herself so honestly and embracing the concept of "nothing to hide." She was well aware that seeing her labia might be "seen" differently by people; and she made the decision to simply not care. If she was socializing and was comfortable sitting in a position that might make her labia clearly visible, then her comfort was what mattered most to her - rather than some "backwards" idea that the sight of her labia was somehow "unladylike."

That was many years ago and the traditional "ladylike posture" notion is fast disappearing. These days, with the "shaving trend" and women going for the "100% tanned everywhere" look, women are much more comfortable with their labia being "exposed." But back then, it was both challenging and fun to see my wife reject the notion of "ladylike posture" and totally embrace being "fully naked", labia and all.

Yes it is a matter of comfort, especially on a hot day. I've seen many women sunbathing with legs apart to let the air in. And why be shy about it. A gentleman may look but he won't stair.

Incidentally why do we refer to it as Labia. We all know what we are talking about.

Well labia is the correct term but lips is what we most call it, like penis is the correct term but we all call it a dick.

RE:The labia and social nudism

We have been social nudists for many years and like your wife we met a couple who were traditional nudists on my wifes first ever social nude adventure to a public nude beach. She had prepared for our trip prior by getting a tan at a tanning salon along with shaving completely. Shortly after arriving at what was a clothing optional beach where most women were wearing a bikini bottom and very few completely naked. We found a spot near another nude couple and decided to set up near them. As we arrived we completely undressed before laying down our blankets, which seemed to catch their attention then we applied sunscreen before laying down. We noticed the nude couple get up and go cool off in the water. Then as they were walking back they stopped at our blankets to inform us that people walking along the shoreline were looking at us especially my wife because everything was on display for everyone walking by so they wanted to let us know. We said thanks but we didnt care if they looked as long as they were not rude. This seemed to surprise them especially when she said why do you think I shaved, because I knew people would look and I wanted to look my best they were also surprised when we walked down the beach without a cover up passed clothed people

I have never understood why women have to hide our lips or whatever. Being cross-legged is unnatural. And to be honest: who doesn't like me not to look. It's that simple.

right, the men don't hide their tails either, so why should we hide?

Yes it's all natural, I always said if you haven't seen it by now you ain't ever gonna see it
Some don't know the differences between Porn and a naturalist just being simply naked and enjoying this wonderful way of living

RE:The labia and social nudism

I returned to nudism about a year ago after divorce. One of the things that struck me was that women are much more relaxed now about how they sit and how active they are. And I haven't come across guys misbehaving about it either.
