Reduced Body Shame: Communal nudity in non-sexual environments like locker rooms helps de-sexualize the human form. This practice can serve as a form of exposure therapy, helping individuals move past irrational fears of nudity.

The YMCA use to be men and boys only and nude swimming. There is even a TV episode of "Eight is Enough" where the father takes son to YMCA to learn to swim. Unfortunately the Y had gone co-ed so when they came out of the locker room naked there was an embarrassing moment.

The YMCA on Maple St. in Kalamazoo MI has an 18+ men's lounge area. It has workout equipment, steam room, sauna, group showers and 2 private showers. Before 2020 some of the older guys would workout naked. I have even done it a few times. When I get a chance I like to workout naked at Steamworks in Chicago. Unfortunately nobody does naked workouts anymore at the Y. Us 50+ guys will walk around naked and use the group showers. The sad thing is the younger guys will wait for a private shower and are always covered.

Wife and I love to go to Korean spas, even though they have separate men's and woman's locker rooms. At a Korean spa they will have varying temperature hot tubs. Some will have just a steam room, while others could have multiple steam and sauna rooms. In these wet areas you have to be naked. In the Korean culture fathers and sons will bath each other. There was only 1 time that a teen boy popped a boner. He calmly got out of the water and headed to his locker to put on his uniform.

Most people do not understand that wearing a swimsuit that has been in chlorinated water will emit chlorine vapors in a sauna. I am real sensitive to chlorine so I can sometimes have to leave the sauna. Some people will say "but I rinsed off". Suits will still retain chlorine until the are washed with soap.

And at some YMCAs and other male only facilities, clothing was optional for some or all other athletic activities

I was lucky enough in primary school to have swim lessons and we had to shower after. When we moved to high school, it was a little different and we didnt shower maybe the first two years after that we did start showering again and some people were embarrassed/nervous which was understandable however I was super comfortable and really enjoyed it. It was a really good experience for me because I realise everybody develops at the same time. Primary school after class one guy was way more developed than the rest of us which makes me self-conscious for one moment but when I looked around and realise nobody else had hair down there I was okay. He was the only one at the time. Few years later can we start showering again together after PE/gym and I realised I was slightly more advanced than a couple of others which made me feel confident but Im not sure I made them feel. That being said for me it wasnt great experience perhaps some of us didnt see it that way. To this day every gym I have joined I have checked out the showers 1st to make sure that they are open and communal because I know what I like haha
