Key west to dry tortugas trip

Return to Discussions

Hi all I planned an awesome nude sailing trip from key west to the dry tortugas islands. Its a national park and beyond beautiful

It's a 5 day trip, not a commercial trip or enterprise. just me renting the boat and sharing the cost with whoever commits to going. I have a descent amount of sailing experience, mostly the virgin islands and florida. I'm NOT a commercial licensed captain. So, you'll sign some sort of "don't sue me, it wasn't my fault disclaimer"
So,. those disclaimers aside; I am interested in a fun nudist trip, with snorkeling, probably diving (if there's enough (2) certified divers).
Be aware, it's 70 miles one way. which at sailboat speeds will probably be all day. Everyone doing their share: helping making food, drinks and having fun.
dates are set at May 30th check in at 5pm till June 3rd check out at 10 am
I feel comfortable doing different scenarios: mixed nudist trip or guys trip only ( or girls trip only if you excuse me presence lol).
Price would depend a bit on the amount of people that commit to the trip; whether or not you are willing to share a cabin etc.

So let me paint a picture to explain: The near brand new catamaran I rented has 4 cabins. Each cabin has a private bathroom with shower. A cabin has a double size bed. no tub, just a shower. the tub is outside and its really big!! Although this boat has a water maker, there still is limited amount of fresh water, so showers are short.. Unless you take the tub outside. stay as long as you like!.
There will be a galley (kitchen area) to prepare meals and a descent size fridge and freezer. I figure a stop at costco on the way to the boat to get supplies to last the trip.

these boats are about $1000 a day. But remember, when you split that with 4 - 10 people, that's not that bad at all for what you are getting and the experience. As a matter of fact, the more people, the bigger the boat and cheaper it becomes and the better the experience. ( A bigger boat is more stable and has more room to hang out etc).
So besides the rental cost of the boat, there is a shared cost of food and yes Drinks for the trip. My guess, really a guess; would be roughballing it about $350- $450 per day per cabin. (incl food and drinks etc). so if you share a cabin either with your companion or stranger (danger), that could be half.
This will be a NO MASK, NO CLOTHES trip. I will put you to work on this trip, (steering the boat, hoisting sails, catching mooring balls, pouring drinks, pouring more drinks, cooking dinner, washing dishes or if you can't do any of that;... walk the damn plank!!).

well, that's all I can think off at this moment. Let me know if you are interested. (either for this trip or a future one).
I would appreciate any comments, suggestions etc. But hold your complaints until after the trip.

Mike

That is really thought out and sounds like great fun. I do not have the time but i hope you find others who do. I would not take anyone on the 70nm trip unless they have sailed before . You will need a second qualified sailor just in case. Good luck.

RE:Key west to dry tortugas trip

This is to short of notice for us. We already have a sailing trip planned for beginning of June.

While we really like the idea of sailing with a group of nudist and making friends. However, Spending multiple days with people we just meet in close quarters is going to be a dealbreaker. What we would love to do is nude flotilla. Two cabin monohull run about half that. And we could charter our own maybe bring close nudist friends. This would give people their own space to retreat to from time to time. And if there was an experienced captain to guide the flotilla it would allow some less experienced captains a chance to get some coastal sailing experience. Sailing with a group where someone made the trip and has local knowledge is preferable. It would still be social. A nude potluck or bbq at each destination would be awesome. Even more so on a remote beach. Even without that it would still be social. Sailors must drink and swap stories after a successful passage. If this didnt happen the universe would shatter.

We like the idea of this trip. We have mixed feelings about 4 days naked in close quarters with people you just met. Most of the time people are great and it would be a good way to make new friends.

update 1:

Dates are pretty much set around may 30th ( or 29th) till about June 2nd-3rd. I've talked with the rental company and am a bit bummed that check in is not until 5 pm on the first day and check out is at 10 am on the last day. SO, that basically means that first and last day, are not sailing days. (potentially you could sail the last day from a half way point if we get a bright and early start). There is a place to overnight in the marqesas keys (about 25-30 miles from key west).
So to make this work, it truly needs to be a 5 day charter.
Day 1: check in at 5pm
Day 2: get an early start and sail along some uninhabited keys and islands to the Dry Tortugas national park
Day 3: spend the day at the Dry Tortugas, probably at a couple of different spots, (There is an old fort, and some pretty islands to explore) a bunch of good snorkeling and diving spots
Day 4; 3 options: 1: stay half the day and in the early afternoon sail to the marqesas and spend the night there ( some nice beaches to explore)
2: sail off early and go to marqesas and spend the rest of the day there
3: sail off early and continue all day to key west.
Day 5; either finish the last 3-4 hours to key west early in the morning or if we arrived the night before in the marina then just check out at 10 am.

Sounds like a great trip. Do you have responses? Timing would require us to juggle some things on out schedule. If not this time, this is definitely something we are interested in

would be happy to have you on board. Dates will be check in on May 30th at 5pm. check out on June 3rd. I'm currently looking at 2 different boats (depending on commitments), a 3 cabin 41 foot monohull $2300 / 3 = 770 p.p plus extras (gas, food etc), or my preference a 40 foot cat with 4 cabins and 4 private baths. $4100/4 = $1025 p.p plus the same extras.
I'll probably make a decision in the next few days . So far I have 2 commitments (including yours truly). the other is a local female friend of mine that is big into fishing. Fresh fish for dinner sounds like a good plan.

Thanks for the info Capt. but the timing and logistics made the trip a bit complicated for me at this point. A great cruise is likely especially with a full moon pending. I wish you good fishing along the way.

Trip was a naked blast, partied in Key west, danced naked at the "garden of eden' (nude rooftop bar) , explored fort jefferson at sunset, did some really spectacular snorkeling on a wreck from the 1800's , good friends, great food.
