Rep. Katie Hill

Return to Discussions

Im conflicted about the Katie Hill controversy. I think her private life is her own, and she seems to have been going through some bad stuff, but having worked political campaigns, messing around with a campaign staffer is as bad as any other sort of workplace harassment. Still, for legit media outlets to publish the photos amounts to them helping with revenge porn. That is unacceptable.

When you get past the problematic nature of her relationship with the staffer, the photos were of a woman who, while not necessarily calling herself a nudist, was comfortable being naked. One was a nude sunbathing photo of the kind youd see on here (yes I looked). As much grief as she got for the relationship with the staffer, shes getting a lot more grief for doing what many of us do in our free time.

Anyway, Ive run across one former congressperson that is a nudist, a one time candidate for congress who Ive chatted with at our local resort and one current congressperson who has enjoyed a skinny dip or two. Just so you know.

And no, Im not posting a picture.

This "hacked nude celebrity" trend has been like a plague on public perception of nudity. Because it is sensationalizes nudity to appeal to the public's voyeuristic impulses. There's not much the "hacked celebrity" can do about it; except sue.

But singer Sia did something about it. She knew a hacked picture of her sunbathing nude was about to be released; so she "leaked" it herself first. By proudly "owning" the picture, she "desensationalized it", so to speak. It actually made her even cooler to her fans.
Jennifer Lawrence's approach, as an actress, was to just do a nude scene. She did "Red Sparrow" right after her nudes were leaked; and it effectively made them less "interesting." And the movie gave her the opportunity to be nude on her terms.

These are just two ways to combat the whole "hacked/leaked nudes" thing. To get ahead of it - if possible - and providing a simple/candid explanation for the nudity; something people can wrap their heads around. Or getting behind it like JL and "taking back" public perception: J-law is an actress and nudity is also part of her craft.

Its part of the paradox we have about nakedness: we find it distasteful and taboo, but we all want to see it.

I wonder if nudity was, if not normalized, more accepted in one way or another, such scandals would be impossible. One thing Ive found was that there are a lot of people out there that hang out naked at home or have a skinny dip here and there, they just dont admit it. If they did, would it be a big deal to find out that a congresswoman does the same?

History is chocked full of examples of people that try to profit off of someone else in one way or another.

A bit of a follow up: an operative that works for Julian Castro named Ashley Fairbanks wrote a piece for the Guardian on how shes dealing with photos from her past:

This really isnt about Katie Hill. Its about the long fight women have had to have agency over our own bodies. Its about how we are asked to be both the virgin and the whore. Its about how women still arent allowed to own our sexuality.
