Naked Sumo Wrestling

Return to Discussions

Lately I've been really into sumo wrestling and hold my own "matches" using a big mat with a ring on it as well as my heavy standing punching bag that bops around.I follow sumo technique and rules to knock it out of the circle, and sometimes it even wins when it bops me and knocks me back/over lol! It's really fun and it's a great workout!

It's also one of those rare occasions where I think it could be fun to wear something (the mawashi otherwise known as the sumo loin cloth) to add authenticity, but everywhere I check they're really expensive so I just sumo wrestle totally naked like I do everything else. Still a very fun experience and I don't think of myself as any less of a sumo wrestler for not wearing a loin cloth. I actually think of myself as a rebel sumo wrestler who has tossed away his loin cloth and is thus always naked.

Try looking for a rokushaku fundoshi should you feel the need to wear anything, much cheaper if you just want to try something out.

Not Sumo Wrestling, but I remember reading on another board that back when nudity was permitted for most athletic activities at some YMCA's, some men would wrestle nude because they thought that a non-nude opponent would be intimidated by it. Could have the same effect here.

The mawashi is Sumo is not only a garment to cover up, but also a part of the wrestling tradition (i.e., grabbing it is used for many throws). In many ways it's like the Judo-gi jacket used in judo, or BJJ, or the other jackets used in Shuai Jiao or Mongolian wrestling. But, training without is also good. For example in BJJ they do no-gi training, either in skin tight clothing, or normal street clothes. It certainly changes the dynamics of the wrestling. So why not nude sumo? Sounds good to me.

That's really helpful info, thanks! Those are neat, I could use one if I'm ever in a place I can't be naked but wish I was. As for the sumo wrestling, I've ultimately decided I'm good with doing my sumo naked, so I don't feel the need or desire to wear a mawashi or anything else for it now.

I do wonder if sumo wrestlers ever train naked as a different dynamic. I've decided that I'm happy doing sumo without a mawashi, so just totally naked and barefoot in nothing but the skin I was born with. I'm just curious as to if that's ever been done officially though, even historically going way back.

Having lived in Japan (and having been a sumo fan), I can tell you that today they do not train naked. There's no reason to train something that is different from actual competition. These guys are professional athletes after all. A professional football player in the US won't ever train playing football with a soccer ball, or won't train naked just to see what differences are like. The same with sumo. These are very elite athletes who train for a specific event. So, always in mawashi.

There is some evidence that historically women would wrestle nude. But not men in Japan.

Not completely true. Many male athletes in several sports, track, tennis and gymnastics for example, train shirtless even though they can't compete that way.

I have also read that men's swim teams would train nude but wear swimsuits for meets if women were present.

To preface this, I'm all for nude wrestling. For sure... But elite athletes train to do their task mostly as they do it. If you have some news reports about olympic swimmers training (not doing something just for fun, but really training) nude, I'd love to read it. But, I suspect, you won't find it because it isn't out there.
