Nudity In The Bible

This is a group for those who are looking for, or wish to share stories and verses, in the Christian Bible, about nudity.

Jesus Christ and His Naked Life

Return to Discussions

Jesus was born Naked. Jesus was Baptized Naked. Jesus talked and relaxed with his disciples Naked. Jesus was beaten Naked. Jesus was crucified Naked. Jesus arose from the grave Naked. One day we will stand before Him Naked, and He before us Naked. Till that day comes, let us praise him Naked. Nudity has many meanings in scripture. We mostly hear about Nudity being a symbol of shame and guilt. But there are other meanings. The symbol of Innocence, Nothing to Hide, Revealing Truth and Vulnerability. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of Nudity.

Josiah,

Thanks for starting this group. It will be interesting to see who joins and who adds comments to the discussion. Being naked has almost always been part of many cultures. God created our bodies and we should not be ashamed to let people see what beauty God has created!

One day we will stand before Him Naked, and He before us Naked.

As the saying goes you cant take it with you. Usually the speaker is talking about possessions and money, but guess what. Your clothes arent going either.

RE:Jesus Christ and His Naked Life

I'm glad to find this group today.

As born again Christians my wife and I always enjoyed being nude within the house. But due to our previous understanding (or shall I say misunderstanding) of the Word, we had always connected being naked with sex. We were guilty of doing like so many other people do by having a preconceived notion about a subject, based on what we had always been taught (directly and indirectly), that led us to believe the Bible said something that it does not say. We struggled with that. Since joining this site, one of the members of this group showed us a great essay concerning nudism from a Christian view point and it really opened our eyes. Since then, I've gone back and studied the scriptures more without a preconceived "knowledge" about nudism and realized as the young folk say "its all good" when not corrupted by sinful desires. This was a reminder that it is so easy to misinterpret the Word of God if we allow the world to dictate our ideas.

I've never read that Jesus relaxed with his disciples naked. What is your source?

There is some debate as to whether Jesus, or Jews in general were beaten and crucified naked or wore a small loincloth. There is some evidence that non-Jews were so offended by the site of a circumcised penis that Jews were not completely naked in these instances.

There are debates about Jesus being naked in the bible. The only biblical evidence of Jesus being naked is:

Matthew 27:35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Mark 15:24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

Luke 23:34 Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

John 19:23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.

Historians have pointed out that a crucifixion was not only a torturous execution, but also a shameful humiliation. Thats why victims would always be crucified naked: One last insult to injury.

Even tho the bible doesn't say, we know historically that during Jesus' time, men work in the nude. There are historical art and records of men fishing in the nude. Even Peter fished in the nude.

John 21:7 King James Version
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

Jesus would go with his Disciples while they fished and sailed across the sea. It was the custom of the day to be naked. Some scholars try to prove otherwise, But Historical records, ancient art and other evidence show differently.

Even at the crucifixion, some historians contend that Jewish victims were allowed to wear a loincloth because the sight of a circumcised penis would be too disturbing to non Jews who were passing by.

SOME Historians. You choose what you believe.

I guess my first response is a sigh. (Sigh.) I often think we move into overdrive trying to justify our reasons for getting naked "according to the Bible" when really it "just seems the thing to do" (as a writer on spirituality says about getting naked in the desert). I think God loves us, and God really doesn't care what we're wearing (if anything) at the moment.

I think the important thing is that "we are robed with Christ's righteousness". I'm grateful for some of the things I've seen online with reference to Jesus himself as naked: at his baptism; at his resurrection (and for one of these images I'm grateful to Josiah, who has posted on this thread). And as one who believes profoundly in the saving grace of God (in which I am profoundly in need of), that's all I need.
