Who else still uses their Y?

Return to Discussions

Wanted to create a topic to see who still uses their YMCA, and see what the locker room atmosphere is like?

I currently go to my local Y, and its very basic but does the trick. Their locker room hasnt seen an update since the 80s. They have a small communal shower space of 6 shower heads. No one ever uses them.

I recently inquired if they were planning any renovations and why dont they have a steam room or jacuzzi. He just said most Ys do not have them anymore.

Are there any Ys left with mens locker room amenities? Sauna, steam, jacuzzi or open showers?

Hello. I was thinking of become a Y member, and the local ones do have open showers
for men. As far as spa, I think there is one by the pool but it remains closed. The steam
room oddly enough is open. For now I am staying at LA Fit, individual showers but I like
the pool and it's half of what the Y wants for membership.

I go to our local Y. It has great locker rooms and nice showers although they recently took out the shower rooms and put in individual stalls. I hate the stalls, it is so prudish and gymnaphobic. I never wear a towel when at the Y and walk around naked in the locker room. Of course, right now I can't go to the gym and plan to go back to the Y as soon as I can.

My local Y has steam/sauna/spa in the men's locker room. It's quite large, so there are two shower rooms, one with about 10 shower heads and the other with maybe 14. Five or so years ago, they added stalls to one side of each shower room, so they're half-open and half-private now.

The reason for the removal of public bath facilities is more neoliberal capitalism. The Boards of urban area public facilities believe that only the private sector can deliver health, we miss the most important part. The people.

I noticed you are 65.
Some Medicare Advantage plans include Silver Sneakers. If yours does you can get a free membership to LA Fitness.

Our local Y has totally eliminated gang shower and replaced with stalls. The also took the sauna out of the locker room and placed it by the pool. I still walk around the locker room naked and shower naked with the curtains open. Seems like so many guys these day shower with trucks on. I don't truly understand why. I don't mind sharing the sauna with the women, however there are a couple of women who bring scented lotions into the sauna and sometimes the smell is so strong it burns you eyes. I did say something about that to management, but the Young Men's Christian Assn. is now a women's health club, anything a man says don't count.

A friend of mine belonged to a health club that had a co-ed jacuzzi. The largest employer in town had a corporate membership. At one point, they had someone visiting from their location in France or Germany. He jumped in the co-ed jacuzzi nude as was his custom at home. Maybe you should learn a few works of French or German (or even Spanish) and try it in the sauna!

RE:Who else still uses their Y?

I'm only 25 and I've been dreaming of having a gym with open showers, locker room, sauna, and steam room, but sadly I have only been going to Anytime Fitnesses my whole life. Even in highschool I remember not even showering after PE. I hear so many stories of how it use to be and I'm honestly jealous of how most people grew up with them. I've looked into several Y's around me and have had a hard time determining whether or not they have the accommodations. Anytime Fitnesses only have single shower rooms, and it sucks. If anyone is in Louisiana and wants to share some info I'm here for it.

Until I moved to Florida last year, I used one of the YMCAs in Milwaukee Wisconsin area. Relatively new facility with a nice indoor pool and various silver sneakers programs. United Healthcare paid for my membership. The locker room had gang showers, a jacuzzi, and a sauna. Typical dress code in the locker room was nude notwithstanding the various signs. Now I am trying to find a comparable YMCA in the Orlando FL area.

haven't been to the Y in years i use to go during lunch and run the track upstairs or use the weight equipment and than shower and go back to work, yes they still had gang showers but sadly no sauna or whirlpool. i'm curious about the local Y where i live but suspect it's nothing like the Y's of the past.
