Avoiding Plastics

Return to Discussions

Just read an article about a lady who was going to try and not touch any plastic for a full day. She quickly gave up when she realized that her toilet seat was plastic. It seems to me that the only reasonable way to do this is to spend the day outside naked. If you consider a day 24 hours, you would need to carefully select your food packaging and cookware. For sleeping maybe a bamboo mat, 100% cotton sheet, and 100% wool blanket (in my climate at least). If you are hiking anywhere, you would have to think about how you are carrying things. This seems like an interesting challenge, and I might have to give it a go this summer. How would you do it?

Just thinking about that is a challenge. I started off thinking about equipment items like knives, cooking utensils, etc, and it was sort of a fun exercise until I started thinking about things like plastic buttons on shirts and pants and also realized I would not be able to take my glasses or watch. This is a whole lot harder than it sounds.

Oops, I posted then reread and saw that you did specify spend the day outside, naked. That makes it at least doable but still pretty challenging and requiring great care.

Trying to do it in a house is pretty much a non-starter. Carpet, vinyl flooring, paints have plastic, it's a long list. Sitting here writing this, naked, the fabric the chair is made of has plastic in it. Thinking about the outside scenario, what about carrying water. If I want to do this, I will need to figure that out. An aluminum water bottle would work, but most have plastic caps or gaskets. Can't use a water filter. Even an ax with a wooden handle might be an issue. That will likely have a finish on the handle that is plastic-based, at least it would be hard to know.

Wonder if this would be a good challenge to use to suck some non-nudist into the outdoors less their textile.

We tried and failed miserably! hahaha You don't realize just how much plastic is nearly everything you use or touch daily. Can't even get in the car but that's not hard for us to keep from doing for 24 hrs. It was more than difficult, to say the least.
