Have you ever appeared on stage naked?

Return to Discussions

The closest I have come is when I had to go on for one of my actors in a production of Jeffrey I was directing. In one scene all I wore was a pair of men's bikini brief underwear and in another scen all I wore was a jock strap. I later directed a production of Love! Valour! compassion were almost every character appears naked at one time oranother in the show. I unfortunitly didn't have to go on for any of those actors.

RE: Have you ever appeared on stage naked?

The closest I ever got was appearing as an extra in the movie Born on the Fourth of July. I was a patient in a VA hospital, and the first day they put me in one of those hospital gowns that hang open at the back. One of the other actors was complaining that the directors wanted to put him in a scene where several patients were lying naked on gurneys while receiving enemas. I was dying to be in that scene, but alas was not picked.

I once wrote an opera that included a nude scene, but because it was being performed at a university, the director was squeamish about asking the students to appear nude and had them perform the scene in undergarments. I hope that someday it will be performed as written. So many lost opportunities!

RE: Have you ever appeared on stage naked?

Yes, several times. First time it was during a show of several short plays. This one was about censorship and I was the Statue of David. I also did a skit about dress codes and noting some jobs, like nude art model, has a NO dress code.
I have also been nude in a few horror films. And some of those scenes are online.

Have you ever been nude on stage?

My first time on any stage was the lead in an innocent little comedy presented by my nudist club. It was called Barely Proper. It was designed to give outsiders a glimpse of the nudist life. Any nervousness, felt, was about the performance and how we would be perceived by the small audience. The fact that the audience was clothed and we were nude was not a consideration. I felt great the every time I got a good laugh from the audience. In some ways it was a life changing experience. I went from being somewhat quiet and shy to much more outgoing. I later took some acting lessons and appeared in community theater groups. I regretted that no additional nude parts were available since I was totally comfortable on stage without clothing.

Several Firsts

I recently (June "09) sang solo and naked, both for the first time,at the Eastern Naturists Gathering in Lenox, MA. Every year I have gone to ENG I have attempted to stretch my limits concerning nudity and my comfort with being nude. (I had terriblebody imageissuesin my youth) Forth years ago was the last time I sang before an audience - in the chorus, and never solo. At ENG I sang "The Man in the Moon" song from Mame as a tribute to Bea Arthur. Originally I planned to go on stage wearing a semi-sheer floor-length caftan, and then put on a blue sheer robe when I sang the song. (also a pointed hat like Vera wears as the Lady Astronomer in the show) After practicing putting on the costume I decided to start naked and just put on the open-front robe and hat, which was much easier to do and gave me the opportunity to do my first naked performance before400 people. I don't know if this counts as far as the poll is concerned. My audience was also nude. I don't think I'm ready to do this with a textile audience.

RE: Several Firsts

I performed in a show at the ENG about 10 years ago. I had a blast.

I did play Horse in a production of 'The Full Monty'. My co-workers came out to see the show and had a blast. Would welcome a chance to be nude again on stage. Now, the audience for my nudity are the artists and sculptors I model for.

Last Satuday night did a performance art gig at a local gallery. And all four of us were nude.

I'm curious...which version of "Barely Proper" did you do? The original, or an update?
Thanks!

As far as I know it was the original as preformed in Florida prior to our production at the Ponderosa Sun Club in Roselawn, Indiana. This was back in the early 1970's. If memory serves me correctly the original title was "Grin and Bare It. I'm afraid that I am too old to play Derek Leet but I was never comfortable with that character name, anyway. LOL

Macnude-- Thanks for the update. "Grin and Bare It" was actually the revision of "Barely Proper" that played on Broadway(!). The original "Barely Proper" has been revised many times by many different people...sometimes updating it, shortening it, etc. I have a copy of the original play, as well a revision, but I'm always on the lookout for others. If you know someone who might still have a copy of "Grin and Bare It," I would love to get my hands on it....Thanks!
