I live in the wrong state, but a BBQ cook off sounds like it would be fun. I have a joke shirt that has a picture of a (textile) boy holding a burned hot dog on a stick with the words "I went camping and burned my wiener" on it... lol

LOL.. All Joking aside;Working around smokers is not quite as dangerous as grilling on an open flame but as long as one follows the rules there should be no problems. For safety and sanitary reasons we require all competitors to wear an apron while prepping and while working with their cookers.

I rarely wear an apron and when I do it's mostly for show so my guests will feel more comfortable about eating what I prepare. However I am more inclined to wear gloves. This is for real and for show. One advantage of wearing an apron is it gives me a place to put my hand towel.

At home I don't use an apron and have had no problems what so ever, grilling or smoking. But dealing with the public , or sort of public, is a different story. Last thing I need is a complaint saying "No one told me I had to wear an apron". Most people could do it with out issues but there will always be a select few......

Alas I do not have a portable grill otherwise I would come cook....maybe judging, hmmmmmmm!

There are limited full RV spots available so you may want to sign up early if you want to bring your RV. There are plenty of dry camping and tent spots available.
