Nudity in Vermont
I have heard that there are 251 towns & cities that allow nudity in public, provided that there is no sexual intent. I would like to hear from anyone that lives in Vermont if this is true.
Don't live there but my understanding is that there is no state laws against public nudity, and only a few cities and towns have one.
Typing one phrase into Google returned this.
Unlike most states, Vermont does not have a law against public nudity. But that doesn't mean there aren't local ordinances banning indecent exposure. There are also state laws that make it illegal to engage in lewd and lascivious conduct while in a public place.
As always, just claiming to be a nudist wont get you out of a situation where someone thinks you are up to no good.
I think the simple sentiment in terms of Vermont is that nudity is legal, but not lewdness - but there are some local ordinances and laws indeed. I can say (having enjoyed them for several years), that there are some great nude spots:
The Ledges, Wilmington, VT
Southwest Cove Lake Willoughby, Orleans, VT
Rock River, Williamsville, VT
There use to be a GREAT resort, Coventry, but I believe it has closed permanently after years of operation. I have met some very nice and long-term nudist friends in VT.
I go to Vermont all the time and have for years. What others have expressed here is basically true. There are no State laws against nudity but once it was all publicized (when Geraldo Rivera made his visits and "news" reports etc) some communities passed local ordinances. Sadly, some incredible swimming holes that had been traditionally clothing optional, such as Warren Falls and Clarendon Gorge now became restricted or textile only. Nudity in Vermont is legal on most public land. You can not walk naked down Main Street or in a city park or town common, but you can go naked on most hiking trails. I recommend, and as a frequent user and lover of nudity, request that if you visit, try to be discreet. As others have said, lewdness is not accepted or in my mind acceptable. There are always local conservative voices trying to ban nudity in their town, so I feel it's our responsibility to be respectful. I am able to hike and swim in many locations throughout the state and I wouldn't want to see it become as uptight and controlling as it is right next door in my native New Hampshire.
In southern Vermont, Rock River in Newfane is hugely popular in summer. The Ledges is not too far away. In northern Vermont, near the Canadian border, the southwest cove at Lake Willoughby in Westmore is a beautiful place, although, many think the days are numbered now that huge parking accommodations and public advertising brings more and more non nudists in.
