Backyard up-grade

Now that the kids have left the nest, and some other changes in home life, I'm able to make some changes to the backyard. A new patios almost completed with a hot tub scheduled for next year. Next will be some strategically placed plantings. Most of the work has been done in the nude. of course. Even the wife's getting excited about the possibilities.

I'd suggest some rapid growing evergreen material for screening. I began my patio planting over 10 years ago and now I can walk around nude or sunbath without having to worry about being seen by the neighbors.

We got a hot tub just a few years before we were empty nesters. Our 3 sons would use the tub and of course have friends over in it as well. With only 1 son being a nudie that meant clothing being worn. The detergents/fabric softeners and body oil from growing boys crashed the water more than I can count. Often it looked like gray soup water when they were done. I either used a lot of extra chemicals to straighten it out or had to dump the water and start again.
I put a nice sign on the tub "NO CLOTHING ALLOWED" and would not back down from that rule from anyone. Problem solved !

Thanks to everybody for the advice!! A few evergreens and some ornamental grasses should do the trick.
AndyDi Too Funny! At least she was taking the future FIL's advice and going nude.

Never having a hot tub, I had no idea water quality could be such a problem. Sounds like no suits is the way to go.

Funny I should stumble upon this today, as I'm draining and cleaning my hot tub. We've had our tub for 15 years now, and along with our pool, neither has ever seen a swimsuit. Nude use only is the way to go. I'm fortunate in that our back yard is very private, and we go naked everywhere on our property except for the front yard. Strategic use of umbrellas and levered canopies can be a great help if you have any neighbor's windows that invade your nude space. You don't have to wait for them to grow, or worry about them not being thick enough for protection. I have one umbrella placed over my waterfall patio area just for that reason, but that's the only possible exposure we have.
I hope you can create a wonderful naked space to enjoy!

Thanks RabbitnBunny, that's a great idea.
If anybody thinks painting can be messy try cutting brick with a wet saw. I was red head to toe. I've been doing my cutting when I've been alone, don't want to ruin any clothing, but it washes off the skin easily.

Well Craigslist worked out for us and we were able to pick up a cheap hot tub! It's larger tan we planned, but being able to fit more people in a hot tub cant be a bad thing. I replaced the skirting and it looks like new. I was also happy to have some work in the backyard I could do in the buff. A fewnew plantings are in, and the wife and I had our inaugural soak last night!!

Congrats! Build it they will come! One of the best things we got was a hot tub for socializing.
You will learn chemical balanced tub water is an ever changing dance. I piped hot water from my tankless water heater over to our indoor tub. When I filled the outdoor tub I ran a hose from the indoor tub water line.
When the water crashes or needs changed I can do a quick dump and refill with what ever temp I set on the water heater. Otherwise that little 5KW heater takes a long time to heat the tub back up.

I'm sure I have a lot to learn about water maintenance. It will be a change from the kids quickset pool. Sounds like keeping laundry detergent chemicals out will be a help.

Remember if you have fast growing evergreen plants that once they get to the height they want to be to prune them every year otherwise they turn into the neighbour from hell. Also with laylands to prune them in the winter to stop the foliage been burnt and turning a brown colour and never cut into old wood as they never re shoot. Evergreen climbers might be better like lonicera japonica 'Repans' will be a good one as well as a rambling rose such as Mme Alfred Carriere other like rambling rector are deciduous but very fast growing and one plant will cover 30+ of fencing.
