The .303 British (designated as the 303 British by the C.I.P. and SAAMI) or 7.756mmR, is a .303-inch (7.7mm) calibre (with the bore diameter measured between the lands as is common practice in Europe) rimmed rifle cartridge first developed in Britain as a black-powder round put into service in December 1888 for the LeeMetford rifle. In 1891 the cartridge was adapted to use smokeless powder. It was the standard British and Commonwealth military cartridge from 1889 until the 1950s when it was replaced by the 7.6251mm NATO

No.309 Squadron was formed at Abbotsinch on 8 October 1940 as an army co-operation unit for work with the Polish Army in Scotland. It was equipped with Lysanders until March 1943, but Mustangs had been added in July 1942 which, in December, operated from Gatwick on tactical reconnaissance missions over France. In June 1943 the squadron was moved to East Anglia and flew shipping reconnaissance off the Dutch and Belgian coasts. In February 1944, the unreliability of the Mustang's Allison engine caused No.309's conversion to Hurricanes and in April it moved back to Scotland for air defence duties. In October 1944, re-equipment with Merlin-powered Mustangs took place and in December the squadron moved to East Anglia to provide escorts for bombers, a task which lasted until the end of the war. It remained in Fighter Command until disbanded on 6 January 1947.
