Update Messages in Forums How Do they work?

I'm curious. I've been here a couple of weeks, at most, so a newbie, but when I respond to a thread in a forum and go back to the home page, I never see that I've added to forum. In fact, the updates are really out of whack. The post, on the home page, might say 20 minutes ago, but going to the forum shows either my post or someone less than 20 minutes ago.
Ok so my question is, how do the two relate, if they do at all?

Also the username listed under Last Post always seems to be the original poster and not the person who added the last post, though the time refers to the last post!!
I never thought of that scenario. That might explain it.

I find that if you push the refresh button it does update the info on the screen, but this not done automatically by the system unless you close the window and then re-open it.

I'll give that a try, not that I need to see my username listed, but it confuses me that perhaps someone else has posted something after me.
