During the summer, I will often wear basketball shorts. I enjoy the loose and breathable material, and the extra airflow of nothing underneath. I just have to make sure not to place anything too heavy in my pockets, or they'll start to slip!

Try threading a length of cord similar to that used for some swimsuits through the waist elastic channel. It can then be tied to give you a similar level of security to a belt.
I use this technique for track suit pants when I need to put something heavy in the pockets.
