undecided college

Hi.

i am supposed to go in college (or the equivalent that is called CEGEP here) and i am not yet sure what to study there, right now i got a course in philosophy, it is an easy thing to study compare to much other, but it can't really take you anywhere. the thing is i do not know where i am going at right now. i am just saving money (don't want you to send me anything, i work my ass for it on my own) and take it easy for now. just finished high school.

So basically, i am open to suggestion. got anything to suggest?

That is a good question. What are the other things you are good at? Social or science? Medial and social services are always on high demand. Look for something that you are good that ad like doing but also something that will have a long prosperity and not easily replaceable in this AI age.

But you know that that would be in your area.

Jade, I have two children. When they were in high school I told them "Study math and you'll never go hungry." One of them listened the other did not. The one who did is at Apple, the one who did not is a mailman (with a college degree in sports journalism). One caveat: if you do not like math, do not go there. My two cents only.

the truth is i am pretty much just in the average at everything. Even my sex-ed wasn't great, despite having seen both gender nude almost everyday.

Definitely do something that is going to make you happy.. college is expensive and with some degrees thats it, you just have a degree that doesnt get you far. Think about what you enjoy and possibly a trade school. I know people that have a trade they got good at and started their own businesses and retired early. Just my two cents :)

I'll just go with broad generalizations since there's not a lot of info.

This is some of the stuff i would tell my younger self if i could.

Perhaps the nicest thing about Cegep is that it's a good place to be confused and unsure, it's very common to change program. Heck i went back there at 30 and everything was fine.

Every student as and API, go talk to him/her, their whole job is to help student navigate Cegep. When i was there I didn't go thinking that they could not really help me since they didn't know me. The truth is that they don't know you but they've seen thousands of people with the same problems as your, their counseling helps a ton.

If you're planning to go to university, doing one of the pre-uni programs technically gives you 2 more years to think about your future. During that time i suggest that you pick your facultative classes to be something completely unrelated to the main thing you want to do. As an exemple, I did my pre-uni in natural sciences and took greek mythology and nutrition as facultative classes. I even went out of my way to do stuff i would not do otherwise just for the experience. I ended up doing none of those but it helped me by learning stuff i didn't want to do as a job which narrowed my choice of potential careers.

Most technique programs are in high demand jobs, like nursing or social worker. Both of these are government jobs and have CRAZY benefits, like i'm putting all my spare money in a fund for retirement and my friend who is a nurse has put 0$ in and as double the money than me for retirement, just because the government put a ton in it for free. The downside, at least for a nurse is that everything works with "anciennet" with those having more getting to pick stuff first (like vacation, shifts) so when starting you get the shitty hours. That and TSO (temps supplmentaire obligatoire), since were missing so many nurses and hospitals have to be kept open something you have no choice but to work on a certain day.

There a list of techniques here
https://www.quebec.ca/education/cegeps-colleges-prives/services/programmes/programmes-etudes-techniques

In the end there are no wrong choices, if i remember (i might be wrong on this) but cegep is practically free the only time they make you pay is if you fail 2 classes or more for 2 consecutive sessions. If you pass for exemple your Philo1 and 2, French 1-2-3-4 and you decide to change program theses classes are still done you don't have to repeat them, so as long as you don't fail, you'll move forward.

I always find it exiting when young people are getting started in life, good luck to you :)
