pre amtrak

My first train trip was from Los Angeles to Chicago on the Santa Fe. I was a 4 yo an when we pulled into Albquerque on the platform local indians were waiting to sell trinkets. They were wearing feathers an war paint. I was so scared as i thought they were attacking the train.
More recently i have travel on Amtrak on the same route 5 times in the past 5 years So many memories.

RE: pre amtrak

My first train trip was in August, 1970. I rode the Louisville and Nashville's "Georgian" from Chattanooga to Tullahoma, Tennessee, about 85 miles. One locomotive, one baggage car, one coach. I think there were 10 passengers on board. The conductor said that was most he'd seen in a while. This was the nadir of pre-Amtrak passenger train service. But, I had a nice time. The crew were friendly, and the other riders were very nice.
