Male nudity in painting and sculpture

Return to Discussions

Recently I have been to Mexico. One day I was moving around the city and found many nude statue of male figure. Heard that at one point of time, those nude sculptures were frowned upon and were covered. But after several years, again those were uncovered.
While looking at the figures, one thought flashed in my mind. All such nude figures, male or female, painting or sculptures, all over the world, have small penis and breasts. These are small, roundish, cute....
The worship of huge dick and breast are more in porns, where nude body is shown as a vehicle of sex.
I found some nude scuptures in this site which also supports what I am saying.

There can be two ways to explain this.
1. The creators felt that small is beautiful and aesthetically better.
2. They were afraid of showing large dick and breast lest it gets unnecessary attention.
I know, in TN group there are many artists....can any one throw more light on this?

You are indeed a good artist, Lucas. In my brief attempts at life-drawing I found the faces and hands to be the most difficult. I see you have avoided those pit-falls. You are correct it is the whole body, it's balance and tensions which is important, not the sexy details.
By the way has anyone been to the museum in Naples, Italy, near to Pompeii. In the ancient Roman empire a large penis was a sign of virility and wealth. So they display ones that are definitely oversized. They serve all sorts of functions from bollards to the spouts of oil lamps.

@em1dub, very well thought piece of write up.
This answers my query ...i always used to wonder why the guys of slum or village have large penis...most of th etime they remain with less cloths...and they rarely wear under pants.

I think you may be mistaken em1dub. Have you visited Pompeii, Herculaneum or the museum in Naples, Italy? They show what life was like in Roman times. The size of the penis was deemed to represent a man's wealth - the bigger the better. True, art like Michael Angelo's David have small penises but they were created many hundreds of years later. At that time all the art was for a sponsor and my guess is that the sponsor did not want his wife or girlfriend comparing him to someone bigger.
