Upside Down Tomatos
Return to Discussionsthe first tomato we planted didn't survive but tried another and its coming along pretty good, also had a old metal bait bucket that i planted a tomato plant in it actually looks better than the upside down plant, can't wait to see which produces faster..
I saw an ad for a self-contained growing system that looked promising...self-watering, etc and thought there might be a homemade version. Well, I googled it and got a great hit right away. I built it in about 45 minutes, planted and it was wildly successful for me. I should have pulled out the tomatos that I put in it last year, but it stayed alive over the winter and has produced again this spring and summer. I liked it so much that I made another for an herb garden, and it is going to town with basil, garlic, thyme and chives.

I can't help thinking that since the dawn of man we have been sowing seeds in the ground and and they naturally grow upwards towards the sun. So why do we think we can trick Mother Nature?
I have 2 dozen tomato plants I started from seed and it sure is a pain to be moving them inside and outside every day (we had a frost last night and it's not safe here to plant outside until about June 1st). The good news is that I have spent the last 3 afternoons naked outside in the garden.

It's funny reading about gardening in another part of our country, still waiting for a growing season. Our prime growing season is nearly past, with days generally at 88-92 and nights in the mid 70's. And it's still considered cool, lol! We'll be in the mid to upper 90's daily in another month.
