Kitchen Remodeling Contractor?

Return to Discussions

So...I've been wanting to get my kitchen remodeled which would include electrical and plumbing work as well as carpentry, etc. Is it possible to hire a general contractor to do the work ,ensuring building/safety codes, without having a "designer" or plan? Can I hire a contractor and describe what I want with the contractor ensuring it's code compliant?

Finding a contractor for a kitchen remodel should be no problem unless you are looking for someone that works nude. Any general contractor that does that kind of work should be well aware of codes. It would be wise to discuss and spend a little more to not be just barely in code. When I work on my own place, I have always exceeded the codes once to the point that an electrical inspector called it "The worst case of overkill I have seen in my life" He then smiled and said "That is how I do my own place"
The problem in Florida is finding someone that does a decent job. A few jobs that I had to hire "Professionals" for, I had to go and fix what they screwed up.

Thanks for the response...my question was maybe not clear. I don't want to hire a "designer" or architect. I want to have a general contractor who's qualified for plumbing and electrical and have them come, describe to them what I want, and have them do the work (or tell me at the consultation if something I want would be unsafe or not up to code). So, is this possible or do I need to have a code compliant plan BEFORE I hire the contractor?
My only experience with this was hiring a guy to re-side my house after a homeowners insurance inspection dictated the repairs.
Thanks for any guidance you may provide...

You certainly can go directly to a contractor, describe the work you want done - (good sketches, pictures and measurements help) and they should be able to help you achieve the results you want. I would (always) get a minimum of three estimates and don't be shy about insisting on referrals. As for code compliance. no acceptable contractor would risk his license or reputation doing non-compliant work. (Not to say it's never happened!) Best of luck with your project. Bob

I have heard that. What is it with Florida and finding good contractors?
