Return to Discussionswhats your preferance a canoe or kayak, as i get get older i think of swapping my kayak for a canoe - yeah the legs don't bend so easily. been pricing them and even the used ones are expensive. talked to a guy at the river several years ago and he had bought a coleman - plastic canoe at end of the year from a bigbox wholesale store for $75. where the heck are those deals anymore. well i wait till mid winter when people get desperate to unload and find a deal, i'll probably keep my kayak as it really tracks good and i've only flipped it a few times getting in - lol.
ok if anyone is looking for a good beat around canoe today i went to sport authority and was checking end of the year clearence prices on their canoes the first one i saw wasn't a deal so i glanced at the kayaks - already have a old town vapor and glanced around the store and headed to the door and when the clerk said have a good day i glanced back and said thanks and saw another canoe that i missed on the top shelf across from the over priced other one so i changed course and headed back to check it out. wow a pelican 15.6 foot for $199. what a deal , they replaced the old faithful coleman ram x and sure it's not a $1000. canoe but i'm only interested in fishing and sightseeing and i read reviews where some of the coleman ram x are still being paddled 20 years later. seats are kinda cheap but at this price i won't complain , the temperture has fall in the 40f for tommorrow but sunday suppose to be in the high 60f so i'll give it a try . not endorsing the store but if you have one in your area and $199. in your pocket it's not a bad deal.
It depends on the situation. I really prefer the independenceof a kayak formost uses, but if we're going somewhere that requires portages, we use the canoe.We spend a lot of our vacations in remote lakes / rivers and if we're setting up a base camp, we'll use the kayaks (surprising what you can pack into one of them!). If we're lake jumping and portaging we use our backpacks for gear and take a Kevlar canoe because it's a PITA to have to portage gear and 50+ pound kayaks any distance.
finally a sunny day high 60f and a little wind so took out the new canoe to the lake, weighs about 80# but not a big deal unloading ftom bed of truck. since i was solo i turned stern around to become the bow also brought both a canoe and yak paddle, i vote for the yak paddle could be a little bit longer but so much easier to paddle. it was a little windy and i can definately tell the difference between the canoe and my yak tracking so much easier and not catching the wind as much. my canoe will mainly be for fishing though maybe some exploring and sunbathing , the yak more for exploring but i like em both and great exercise.
i can definately tell fall is here yes i'm a whimp i love spring and summer but hope to get a few more adventures in before snow (yeah right) we have a state refuge that has about seven lakes of different sizes hope to get up there soon but if not i have two choices nearby. i have decided to check the wind before my next outing and let that be deciding factor between the yak or canoe, also thinking of a building a small motor mount for canoe for electric motor but the paddling was great exercise but on windy days it would be helpful and there are a few places off beaten path it would help me get to.
