Return to Discussions

Have just lost my job.

Considering we are in the middle of a pandemic.. people on furlough and people being made redundant. I could do with some prayer at this time.

Loving God be with Simon at this time. Help him to find new work quickly. It is worrying days we live in, but give him your peace which passes understanding. Help him to know that you will hold him safe. Allow him to know your love, and to trust fully in you. Lead him to the new place where he is to be and help him to have peace about his decision. Amen.

I hate to throw cold water on this, but how does this kind of prayer work? I have been in your situation many times, and frankly I got really frustrated when so many people would offer to "pray that I find a job." Their prayers never changed anything that I could see; my job search took the same amount of time and struggle regardless. It destroyed my ability to pray for a long time. Only in recent years have I been able to get back into prayer, and then, it means something different to me now than it did then.

How we pray is ultimately determined by our beliefs about free will. The HR teams reviewing resumes and making hiring decisions have free will. Will God intervene in their freewill decisions, or not -- this is the question that we answer in our minds when deciding to pray about employment.

I guess something for you to think about is the question is prayer meant to bend God to do what we want him to do? Or is it to help us to be in touch with God, and to allow him to show us his way as we explore our needs and wants. As you go through life you discover that God's timing is rarely our time, but hopefully when we look back we see that God's timing is always right. People will pray for us and we may not get a job immediately, but as we listen to the Spirit we will be led to the right place.

Try to think of prayer more like a Bluetooth connection. In we are all Cellular devices.
When large amounts of us focus on one thing at a time A great amount of energy is focused in one direction. No it may not make much of a difference, but it can.

At minimum it lifts the human spirit and focus on moving toward the positive. To pray also warms the heart and can help you maintain that feeling of love of and for others. Best of all it doesn't cost a thing but can have great personal value and meaning. Just depends on the individual perspective I suppose.

I think it's because our will is not yet in line with His.

John 14:14
If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

The key in that verse is "in My name." Our will must align with His. Only then can our prayers be answered.

Like with a job loss. It sucks. But I've found God's entire heart is for us to draw closer to him. If you ask for what's aligned with His will, he'll answer it. I've gone through adversity lately. Although God has not given me my answer for my pain, he's given me tools, relationships, and resources to overcome the pain.
