A sarong
Return to DiscussionsI have a sarong story for you.... I was in the island nation of Samoa. A place where most men where a sarong...or Lavalava, as they are called there. Even the police officers wore them as their uniform up until a few years ago. Men have their regular Lavalava and dress lavalavas..belted with pockets.Anyways, I wore mine freely down there while on the beach and in the villages. Men always had to wear a shirt with them, if they were on the road or around the village... The "resort" and beach were the only places you can be shirtless. Or in your fale or house at home. I was taught the proper way to tie it, for a man...it's different for women. I went to a small island and got a tattoo.....traditional, tapped on with a pigs tooth and a stick. I stayed a few days, but the tattoo was still very sore, painful really. I was told not to wear shorts, because it would rub the tattoo. It was time to leave. So I sported the Lavalava, got on the boat and caught the 1st local bus back to the Capital. As I was maneuvering up the steep bus steps, with my backpack over my shoulder, my Lavalava came loose. I was standing bottomless ....completely.... in front of a fully loaded bus. I put my backpack down..pulled up my Lavalava, that was on the floor, retied it, and made my way to the back of the bus, to sit where the guys sit. There is a hierarchy on the bus, as to who sits where. No one spoke a word, as the Palangi in the Lavalava, made his way down the aisle. After the bus was rolling, the handsome guy next to me leaned over and whispered in my ear. He said, "we wear underwear under our Lavalava's." That was it. I made it to my stop, and got off the bus without incident. As the bus rolled away, the sound of laughter could be heard even after it was out of sight.
I might add...nudity is strictly forbidden in Samoa. Women will wear all their clothes while in the sea.
