Skinnydipping as opposed to swimmimg naked?

Return to Discussions

I draw a distinction between skinny dipping and swimming naked at a nude beach. Does anyone else do this? To me skinny dipping is swimming naked wherever you are. When I am swimming naked at a designated nude beach it is a sanctioned activity. I love it. But i think of Skinny dipping as more a personal choice to go naked wherever you are. i'm curious if anybody else sees it this way. If I go for a hike and come upon a nice pool of water or swimming hole and i make the choice to jump in naked I call it skinnydipping.

RE: Skinnydipping as opposed to swimmimg naked?

This discussion has been amusing...let me try to "put a fork in it." Skinny-dipping and swimming naked denote (that's the key word) exactly the same thing, but the connotation of "skinny-dipping" is a surreptitious (clandestine) activity. For example, one might say, "When the Smiths were away, we snuck into their yard and went skinny-dipping in their pool," but you would be much less likely to say, "and went naked swimming in their pool." Conversely, one would be less likely to say, "We went to a naturist resort and went skinny-dipping in their pool." Swimming naked in the context is more normalized, so using a term that's most often related to clandestine activity is less appropriate. It'sall about denotation vs. connotation.Well, I'm the one who started it and now that you put the fork in it...I'd say it's done! This is very well articulated and goes right to exactly the way I see it as well. Your examples are perfect. I hope others agree. Thanks!

For me Skinny dipping is when you are somewhere clothed and decide to drop your clothes and take a dip in a lake, pond or pool. If you are at a nudist venue like a resort or nude beach and you go in the water it is going for a swim. It's expected that you would be naked when doing so.
I love to surf nude which kind of ruins it for the times when I can't.

I don't see going in the sea at a naturist beach as skinny dipping. Skinny dipping to me is something that is done out of the norm, like going with a group of friends (who aren't nudists) and you suddenly all decide to strip off and run into the water naked whether it's the sea or a swimming pool.
It's also a good way to get a group of friends into getting naked and then trying to get them to do it on a regular basis and turning them into social nudists.

Thank you Nakedhiker for starting this entertaining thread. Like most other contributors I agree with your definition. On one level the two are the same - you get wet regardless what you call the action. But there is a difference based on the context. I guess areallynicenudistguy (the man with the fork) put it most succinctly... BTW - I equally enjoy both ... regardless what we agree to call it in the end ...

I agree with NUDETOM. Usually just a group of friends outside for a day. Sun's hot and the water is cool. Everyone strips and gets in the water. This is skinnydippin. I hike allot in a national forest. So on really hot days and COLD streams, I skinnydip. When I'm at a nude resort and I hit the pool,,, naked swimming.

When engaging in an activity which is not mainstream in the society in a place dedicated to that purpose - it already gives you a heightened sense of freedom. But when you are doing the same thing in a non-dedicated area - the sense of freedom reaches an even higher level ...

We are getting the TN gang together at Sandy Hook, Gunnison Beach, NJ. Saturday and Sunday June 27th and 28th. Look for the TN flag and Homer Simpson running Naked. Make sure to bring a friend and your birthday suit.
How to I.D. our fellow TN Friends/Members Friends of TN. As we all know there have been several discussions as of how to identify who belongs to TN while on a Naturist/Nudist setting, right?
Well, I've came across a temporary solution, Itriedit at Spa World and it worked perfectly. And so with that said I wanted to share with all of you, and so here we go . . .
Forabout $5.00 USD you can have a plain green silicone wrist-band delivered right to your front door.
Either from Amazon.com or directly from the supplier at HDE:

Skinny dipping is shedding clothes where or when it might not be designated as such. At the lake last summer I dropped my suit and took a dive off the rock. That to me was skinny dipping.
