Normalising Nudity

Nudity in the evening news

Return to Discussions

Have you ever noticed that if a story on the evening news contains nudity it receives one of two 'tones'?

The first tone is ridicule, the second is vilification.

It sort of reminds me of how the media treated LGBTIQA issues and stories back in the 1970's - not very well.

Recently here in QLD there was story about an attempted home car theft. The perpetrator was brought to justice by the home and car owner, who up until hearing his car start had been sleeping naked. With no time to dress he raced out to his driveway naked to save his prized possession car. This story ran the next 24 hours with innuendo and puns on all the possible words associated with being nude!

I ask myself why? After all the home owner was doing what I believe a great percentage of Australian's do, even if they don't consider themselves to be nudies, and that is sleeping nude. But the media treated this fact like it was some tryst in the story that was grist for the mill. To me it should not have been a factor in the story!

Normalising nudity is up against it whilst ever the media treat nudity like this. Its time to change this!

Yes more than an ounce of truth in what you say.

The other story to reference is a politician who had some misdemeanours to his name but also choose to be nude at home... And that was treated with disdain by the media as though nudity itself was a crime and somehow made his other misdemeanours greater.
