Wildlife Encounters

Return to Discussions

I posted this in a more local group, but thought I would also put it out there for the larger community of Nude Hikers.

There is just something different about coming across wildlife naked. Last week on one of my favorite hikes I came upon an antelope and too many elk to count (five herds). The highlight, good and bad, was a moose that crossed the trail 60 feet in front of me. She looked at me an kept going. If they take exception to you, its not good. I often see bear on that trail, but I haven't come across one yet this year. I had a great bear encounter last year, but that's another story. I am sure it is not so, but I feel like the animals treat me differently without clothes. I end up closer to them, rarely on purpose. Only in a spiritual sense can I see any reason why wildlife would care if a man is naked or not. It is probably just me, but I do feel more in their element, closer to them, when I am dressed as they are . What have been your naked wildlife encounters?

A couple of times I have met rattles on the trails. Or a Gila Monster just a beautiful animal. But I was hiking naked so I just keep going, its so much fun. The dogs do not need to meet those animals, also. I have not noticed that animals see me differently. But people seem to, so I keep a cover up close. The birds,so many to hear & see.

Nothing to the extent of your situations but yesterday while hiking in the Indiana dunes just off Lake Michigan I was surprised by the large number of six lined racerunner lizards on the trail. Its been very cool here (so we outdoor nudist have been complaining about!) So i have to assume the lizards stay in the grass before hiking higher up into the woods for the hot weather of summer. The lizards seemed neither impressed or offended by my nudity but a clothed hiker who spotted me steered his wife in another direction. I did slip on my shorts as to not to offend.

RE:Wildlife Encounters

I've had encounters with a moose and a bear. The moose was in New Hampshire (I'm heading there tomorrow and will be on the same trail for my evening hike) and while it was nervous about my presence, it didn't do anything and I was able to keep walking but made sure to hug the tree line should it charge me.

I was on an early morning hike at 530am when I saw the bear. I was going down hill and it was at the bottom getting ready to walk up. We saw each other at the same instant and both of us froze. Fortunately it turned and ran after about five seconds. Not sure that would have been the case if there had been cubs. I was camping that weekend and wasn't far from the campground- I didn't even have a shirt with me and I remember thinking if I had to run I might need to drop my shorts in hopes it would stop for a sniff, and thinking that could be a problematic walk into the campground.

I came across a rattlesnake once as well, and have those in the North East. They would rather give you a rattle warning than strike, and I kept moving fast. It was quite sudden, scared the cr@p out of me and almost had an "accident". Good thing I was naked or I might have had to change my shorts when I got back to the car.

In the warm months I often take my camera and go to the woods naked and barefoot. I can move very quietly which allows me to sneak up on wildlife. I have noticed that if I'm naked they don't seem to be scared of me. I've now got some Does that I can get really close too. Step son says I'm so brown they probably think I'm one of them. LOL

So this is my bear story from last year. I was hiking one of many trails in an area I call the maze - a bunch of old logging roads. I came to a meadow and there was what first looked like a large black rock in the meadow, but it was moving. It was a bear rooting around for something in the ground. He was so intent on what he was doing he had no clue I was there. I have couple of these encounters a year and am fairly comfortable with them, and of may be 20 or so, only once did I end up in a bad spot, between mom and her cubs (another story). Anyway, turning around or going wide were not great options, so I elected to let the bear know I was there. I was a couple of hundred feet away. So I am standing there naked, waving my arms, yelling "hey bear". He stood up on his hind legs looked at me like "what"? He was a big, black as night, guy. He went down to all four and bounded off, of course in the direction I wanted to go. I gave him a few minutes then continued on my way. This was a good bear encounter - he was beautiful. Most of them happen coming around a corner without as much space. There reflexes are faster than ours. Most of the time before it even registers with me, the bear is sprinting off in some other direction.
