Hiking Route Recording App

Can anybody recommend a cheap or free app on iphone and android that will record your route as you hike and later allow that route to be shared with friends? The recommended ones seem to be $30 a year. Which will put most casual naturist hikers off. I am going to try MapMyHike on my next hike and see what features you get for free. Anybody tried it?

I use MapMyRide (since I cycle mostly) to track all my rides, walks, and hikes

I use ViewRanger, you can use it on your PC to plot a course and then to follow it on your phone as well as recording a course that you are walking.

Strava is a free fitness app that you can use to record hikes, runs, bike rides etc. You can view the route online or in your phone after it's complete.
