Nude Modeling

This group is for all of us who have found the joy of modeling nude, be it for an art class, professional photographer, or a free lance artist. Or maybe you're someone who's always thought about modeling naked for class or artist. Here is where you can share your experience, both serious and funny, or if you're new to it, ask questions to see if it's something you seriously want...

How do you find artists to model for?

Return to Discussions

I'm somewhat shy but the idea of modeling is intriguing. How does one find an artist? Safety is of course important. Also, are there modeling classes? Where you learn to model?

Hi - a good place to start is to contact local art schools that offer life drawing and photography classes. You can find interest groups through art supply and camera stores many of which will allow you to put up notices to let people know of your interest. Many artists, groups and models will advertise on Craigslist and similar sites. Once you've located a potential artist I would strongly advise meeting on neutral ground before you actually pose to determine that you are comfortable with them and have. Sense of what they are looking for. And even though you are inexperienced, indicate to them you expect to be paid the going rate. This will help to separate the serious artists from others who may have other motives. You can find the going rate in your area by asking at art supply stores. There is a lot of art activity and galleries in Columbus and they can help you. As for training, our need to be comfortable in your own skin, be able to follow direction, and to remain still for up to about thirty minutes at a stretch . That is the longest anyone should ask you to hold a pose without a short break. To get ideas for poses look at books of figure drawings and photographs. Tell an artist if something is making you uncomfortable ... and don't worry about becoming aroused. It does occasionally happen, but not nearly as often as you would think it might. In my experience, it's a natural occurrence, and most artists are not in the least troubled by it. The moment passes and life goes on. Hope all this is helpful. Feel free to get in touch if you have other questions. I have lots of experience on both sides of the easel. Good luck!

You could start by asking your artist friends if you could pose for them. It sounds like you don't have much experience, so a class might be hesitant to hire you. You need to be able to hold a pose, still like a statue for 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Practice in front of mirror for those lengths of time. It's harder than you think. I've made a few time-lapse videos that I can show to prospective artists and classes.

You also need a portfolio with photos of you. One online site is modelmayhem.com. Here's my modeling profile:

On model mayhem, you can send messages to artists in your area too.
Have fun!

Safety wise, stay with classes until you're comfortable with it and maybe make some contacts. Local art guilds are also a good source of work.

Hi;
I do photography including nudes. Many of my models work through a group called "Model Mayhem". As a member you can join as either a model or a photographer/artist. Also as a model you can indicate if you are interested in posing nude or textile. They have many thousands of members and you can easily search.
